The George Mason University Alumni Relations is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person for a Director of Alumni Engagement. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations, this senior leadership position works collaboratively with alumni program staff, university advancement and Foundation colleagues to develop and increase Alumni Engagement. This position will assess program effectiveness, develop strategy, cultivate a strong team of staff and volunteer leaders to support the strategic goals of the Office of Alumni Relations. The key responsibilities include engagement strategy, engagement programming, communications, university-wide collaboration, and overall alumni relations program assessment.
Purpose of the Organization:
The George Mason University Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations is charged with generating private philanthropic support for the university, as well as engendering strong donor and alumni relationships through creative programming and compelling communications. The mission of the Office of Alumni Relations is to work with the George Mason University Alumni Association (GMUAA) and its Board of Directors to facilitate outreach and communication to and among alumni, and to provide opportunities for alumni to be engaged in the life of the university consistent with the goals and objectives of the institution. The mission of the Alumni Association is to strengthen George Mason University by engaging alumni through mutually beneficial programs, services and fellowship that encourage active participation in and support of the university.
This position is responsible for:
Alumni Engagement Leadership:
Support the implementation and management of alumni relations programs consistent with the university's strategic mission by growing volunteer networks and providing outreach to alumni;
Serve as a senior leader on the Alumni Relations team advising the AVP and providing leadership in developing and implementing strategic priorities and goals in the areas of alumni engagement; identify the key elements of engagement by articulating the ways in which Alumni Relations provides mutual benefit to the university and its alumni;
Develop strategy for alumni engagement based on long-term effort, life-long engagement and connection with their alma mater, and demonstrates clear mutual benefit of engagement;
Develop and identify key metrics focused on high-level behaviors and behavior change that help drive engagement; metrics should have a clear measure of success and quantify impact;
Work with colleagues in Advancement to align investment of time and budget to those efforts that are proving to be most effective in engaging alumni;
Develop and/or maintain strong working relationships/partnerships with key university stakeholders and unit-based colleagues to maximize resources;
Maintain knowledge of best practices in alumni relations, alumni engagement, volunteer service and management, metrics and assessment, alumni programming, communication, and philanthropy;
Throughout all responsibilities, exercise sound judgment, integrity, initiative, and the utmost professionalism to work effectively with colleagues, stakeholders and strategic partners, and volunteer leaders, always valuing diversity of thought and background, and facilitating an inclusive environment;
Meet regularly with volunteers on and off campus and attend alumni gatherings;
Act in the absence of the AVP.
Alumni Awards and Recognition:
Manage alumni awards and recognition events, including Celebration of Distinction (annual Alumni Association awards ceremony). Duties include working with the Advancement colleagues and chapters during the selection process; planning and management of the event, including invitations, registration, publicity, vendor coordination, speaking program and VIP coordination.
Oversee alumni communications;
Execute a thorough alumni communications plan in coordination with communications colleagues which activates, engages and stewards alumni constituents;
Work with Advancement colleagues to identify uses for digital communications and technology platforms to enhance and measure engagement and programming, as well as streamline volunteer resources and tools;
Supervise and mentor the Assistant Director of Alumni Communications who has the primary responsibility of overseeing web, e-communication, social media, and brand and marketing for the Office of Alumni Relations;
Develop short and long-term strategic goals for alumni communications, including setting milestones and evaluating progress and reach of alumni communications efforts through the analysis of metrics and data;
Serve as a content reviewer for the Mason Scroll monthly e-newsletter, as well as social media and e-communication; serve as a content contributor and co-editor for the Mason Scroll monthly e-newsletter, serving on the project committee and assisting with development and management of the strategic outreach for the monthly alumni e-newsletter;
Provide guidance and help troubleshoot communication issues with Assistant Director for Alumni Communications; serve as communications back up in the absence of the Assistant Director; maintain knowledge of university brand guidelines and industry standards and ensure a positive image is projected for the university and the Alumni Association on all communication channels;
Supervise the development and implementation of a strategy to review and regularly update contact and other personal and professional information of Mason alumni, focusing particularly on obtaining current email addresses; oversee the process of updating this information.
Evaluate and develop a reunion program model that facilitates life-long engagement with alma mater, taking into consideration best practices and trends in alumni engagement and the diversity of Mason's alumni body, including identity demographics, affinity, era of graduation, type of student (transfer, returner, graduate, traditional, etc.) and institutional history; identify and engage stakeholders; collaborate with cultural affinity chapters and groups, regional programs, and young alumni programs; assume primary responsibility for planning and implementation of 50th anniversary reunion and stewardship of Golden Patriots;
Oversee the fall programming initiative; evaluate and develop a fall program that increases engagement and is collaborative across the university, working with units; evaluate and make recommendations for future programming that will enable Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association to maximize alumni engagement and outreach opportunities;
Supervise/manage other alumni events, as they arise. Duties include working with the committee members to select dates and locations for programs, planning and managing all aspects of the event, including invitations, registration, publicity, vendor coordination and speaking programs; prepare alumni event briefs for the VP of Advancement.
Graduate Alumni Engagement:
Develop programs and events to promote graduate alumni participation in the life of the university, including programming of interest to graduate alumni at on-campus signature events, including Reunions, Alumni Weekend, and Homecoming.
Supervise and mentor Office and Budget Manager who has the primary responsibility of overseeing daily management of the Office of Alumni Relations including budgeting, being the liaison to GMUAA treasurer, maintaining processes and procedures, supervising Front Desk reception/student assistants, and managing supplies and equipment; work collaboratively with Officer Manager to ensure that the Office of Alumni Relations is equipped to serve alumni and stakeholders who visit or contact the office, as well as support programs and services and positively represent the university and the Alumni Association;
Supervise Event Support Intern; ensure the intern is available to assist across all Alumni Relations programming and events.
Serve as liaison to the School of Business, S-CAR, Schar, and Scalia Law.
Master's degree, or equivalent education and experience, with a minimum of 7 years of alumni relations experience;
Extensive and proven experience with communications, including e-communications, digital, print, social media, and experience with marketing/promotion;
Proven ability to advocate for programs and initiatives;
Proven leadership, organizational planning, high-level sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings;
Proven ability to work effectively with direct reports, peers, and senior leaders;
Superior writing, editing and speaking skills, and experience with public speaking and developing and delivering presentations;
Experience managing professional staff;
Experience in developing and managing resources;
Experience developing, executing, and evaluating strategy;
Experience in recruiting, organizing, and motivating teams of volunteers, and the ability to identify and engage prospective volunteers for board committees and chapter leadership;
Must be flexible to work some evenings and weekends, especially related to alumni chapter and board meetings, alumni events and programs, and relevant University events and programs; occasional travel is required;
Vigorous work ethic, sound judgment, integrity, demonstrated initiative, and the utmost professionalism to work effectively with colleagues, stakeholders and strategic partners, and volunteer leaders;
Appreciation and understanding of the university's need to foster, maintain and strengthen high-quality individual relationships with alumni;
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively as a leader, as well as a member of a team;
Entrepreneurial spirit, positive attitude and energy to implement new strategies and meet ambitious goals;
Understanding of, and experience with the operations for Alumni Associations or non-profit membership organizations;

Ability to manage multi-phase projects from inception to completion, including the ability to build consensus among team members and balance multiple concurrent priorities;
Excellent computer skills including use of database systems;
Detailed-oriented with a mind for the broader picture, and skilled at resolving issues as they arise; and
Demonstrated ability with strategic thinking and creative problem-solving.
