ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL INITIATIVES, DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS
The Office of Special Initiatives is a new fundraising team to begin immediate and increased fundraising efforts for a number of program initiatives starting with the Data Sciences Center (DSC), the Institute for Sustainable Energy (ISE) and extending to others for consideration. Other program related fundraising priorities will need to be identified and aligned with the University's strategic priorities. This team works in close coordination/collaboration with Boston University's Development & Alumni Relations (DAR) colleagues, Associate Provost for the newly formed Faculty for Computing & Data Sciences, deans, faculty, and colleagues in the Office of Development & Alumni Relations across disciplines, departments and schools.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Special Initiatives for the brand new Office of Special Initiatives (OSI), this position will serve as a critical member of the team focusing on frontline fundraising in conjunction with key members of the University community. The initial focus will be fundraising for the Data Sciences Initiative(DSI) and Institute on Sustainable Energy (ISE) activities, with other initiatives to be added. The Associate Director (AD) will be heavily involved in prospect identification, research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of relevant prospects. The Associate Director will also create and manage a portfolio of principal and leadership/major gift prospects by cultivating, soliciting and stewarding principal and leadership/major gift donors.
A key component to success will be collaborating with colleagues within DAR to advance a wide range of fund-raising priorities. Members of this team include staff from Leadership and Principal Gift teams, school-based development teams, Foundation Relations, the Office of Industry Engagement, and the Office of the Vice President for Research. Primary attention for the AD will be on major and principal gift prospects in tandem with the Senior Director. The AD will create and manage a portfolio of principal and leadership/major gift prospects by cultivating, soliciting and stewarding principal and leadership/major gift donors.
Prospect work: Identify, cultivate and solicit major gift and leadership gift prospects ($100,000+). Goal is to conduct 100 face-to-face prospect visits, create 20-30 plans in Blackbaud Enterprise Constituent Relationship management system (BBEC) and complete 10-12 major gift solicitations per year as well as appropriate solicitations for leadership annual gifts of $1,000 or greater. Ultimately, s/he will construct a major gift portfolio with 80-100 prospects.
Strategic coordination: Work with the Senior Director to coordinate identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for major and leadership donors for OSI priorities. Starting with individual prospect plans, this also includes stewardship events, and communications. The AD will also collaborate with the advisory boards, faculty and staff of the DSI and ISE to advance critical initiatives, as well as other key constituents and University stakeholders.
Prospect research & engagement: Engage alumni and other constituents to increase their connections to SI by developing, organizing, and helping to manage the new Advisory Boards and other programming, events, activities, communications, and special projects. Collaborate closely with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations on these efforts to engage and communicate with donors.
Prospect coordination: Support the Senior Director, VP for Development, and other senior fundraisers in their frontline development efforts by providing prospect research and by staffing their prospect meetings where appropriate.
Significant senior fundraising experience, travel, communication skills, knowledge of broad programmatic fundraising and strong collaboration across key development and University Partners will be expected.
Must have a successful track record of engagement with prospects and donors and the ability to nimbly and creatively develop partnerships resulting in philanthropic support at the six and seven-figure level. He or she will have the particular ability and collaborative acumen to develop and to execute strategy in partnership with the Senior Director, Vice President, Provost's Office, Deans, faculty and other important stakeholders. There must be especially close coordination/collaboration with DAR colleagues and Deans and Faculty Directors of applicable schools and institutes. Direct fund-raising experience with a proven track record of soliciting and closing six gifts is required.
He or she will have a demonstrated success in working and understanding the varying priorities and approaches to fund raising at the University (a breadth of understanding of the principal gifts, corporate and foundation relation giving, planned gifts, donor recognition and stewardship, prospect research, and alumni events).
The successful candidate must also successfully manage up, down and across an organization, as well as individuals and teams. Experience in an institution of considerable organizational complexity typified by matrix relationships of power and influence is critical. Experience in a campaign setting is preferred, and experience in the design of such an effort is a distinct preference.
The attributes of intelligence, integrity, judgment, creativity, courage of convictions, decisiveness, fairness, empathy, and a sense of humor are necessary for success.
Ability to travel extensively, including international, work nights and weekends as required
Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree; a master's degree is preferred. Additionally, advanced written communications, analytical skills, collaboration, and project management skills are required. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
