Northwestern University Genomics Facility NUSeq is looking to hire a Clinical Genomics Specialist to kickstart the Facility’s newly launched initiative on clinical sequencing and genomics services. The position will be leading the Facility’s efforts to establish and maintain CLIA lab accreditation, establish new clinical sequencing/genomics services, and collaborate with the Facility’s bioinformatics team on downstream data processing and reporting. The NUSeq’s Clinical Genomics Services to be launched will encompass next-gen sequencing (NGS) services including whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, targeted gene panel sequencing, and services based on other genomics technologies such as microarray, as well as nucleic acid extraction from patient samples. The position will have ample support from and interactions with bioinformaticians and pathologists.
The NUSeq Facility of Northwestern University provides state-of-the-art genomics instrumentation, informatics, and technical know-how to support clinical practice, translational, and basic research at Northwestern University and Northwestern Medicine. Located at Northwestern’s Feinberg Medical School on the Chicago Campus, NUSeq currently provides over 60 genomics services to scientists at Northwestern on both Evanston and Chicago campuses. These services cover a broad range of technologies, from NGS, microarray, Sanger sequencing, automated DNA extraction, DNA/RNA sample QC, cell line authentication, real-time quantitative PCR, to droplet digital PCR.
NUSeq’s new Clinical Genomics Initiative is built upon the Facility’s rapid growth since establishment in 2015, with operation budget now over $2.5M annually. With this position, the Facility looks to hire a new colleague with clinical NGS experience in a CLIA environment. Please note, this position may work off normal hours due to delivery of critical clinical samples.
Ensures client billing information is complete and accurate.
Compiles billing information for documenting usage and billing information into the Core's automated service tracking/billing system.
Develops cost analyses on services rendered by the Core.
Assists in preparing cost quotes on experimental design requested by investigators.
Ensures that all work is accurately and completing documented.
Interacts with both Core Staff and clients in the planning and execution of experiments/ core services.
Advises PIs as appropriate.
Ensures compliance with University safety protocols, relative to the use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic material, and/or carcinogenics.
Maintains sterile conditions as required.
Plans, conducts and evaluates experiments and assays of varying complexity.
Understands, follows, and troubleshoots protocols.
Records, compiles, and reports data
Provides analysis and insightful interpretations of results.
Participates in beta-testing of new protocols and services.
Develops new methods or customizes protocols for users.
Ensures lab is prepared for service delivery (experimentation)
Ensures established inventory levels, and notes usage trends so that inventory levels meet client demand.
Ensures the recommended maintenance on instrumentation and equipment is performed according to manufacturer and University guideline.
Troubleshoots equipment problems, and mitigates the issues with training and/or repair protocols.
Recommends equipment improvements and/or new equipment.
Assists in the development of usage protocols for new equipment.
Ensures compliance with all University, sponsor and federal rules and regulations.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
4 years of technical or other relevant experience required.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Adequate molecular biology lab skills, including DNA extraction, enzymatic reaction, PCR, sequencing, electrophoresis, etc.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
M.S. or doctoral degree in a life science discipline.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Familiarity with the CAP/CLIA accreditation process.
Skilled in next-gen sequencing technologies, including preparation of libraries, sequencer operation, and run monitoring/troubleshooting.
Experienced in whole genome, exome, and gene panel sequencing of clinical samples.
