The Journalism Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA, seeks a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Public Relations, to begin September 10, 2020. The successful candidate will teach courses in public relations principles and methods, writing and editing, and public relations campaigns as part of the Journalism curriculum and the interdisciplinary Integrated Marketing Communications minor. Duties also will include developing new courses in digital content and emerging fields within public relations. Ideal candidates will understand the importance of cultural competence in these areas and demonstrate skills at developing content and campaigns to reach diverse populations.
Preference will be given to candidates with recent professional experience in writing, multimedia, data analytics and digital strategies; experience in working with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment; a Doctorate in Public Relations, Advertising, Strategic Communication, Mass Communication, Marketing or a related field; demonstrated effectiveness in college or university-level teaching; and evidence of scholarly and/or creative achievement.
Professional experience in public relations and/or marketing communications, a Master’s degree, and demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language are required. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level.
Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The teaching load averages 12 units per quarter with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and service expectations and with a significant reduction in course load in the first two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal.
The successful candidate will join eight full-time faculty and 12 adjunct faculty and staff serving 275 undergraduate students in digital, print and broadcast journalism; public relations; and advertising. Our award-winning student news organization, student-run public relations agency, campus TV and radio stations, and interdisciplinary collaborations provide laboratories for elevating knowledge and opportunities for research.
