Summer Adventures in Learning is a unique summer day camp experience hosted on the campus of Science & Arts Academy (SAA) in Des Plaines, IL. Programming is available for all 3 year olds through rising 8th graders in the community, including those who attend SAA and other schools during the year. There are no other eligibility requirements. Summer Adventures in Learning is a highly sought after day camp in the area and spaces often fill well before the summer begins! Staff choose to work at Summer Adventures because of the professional challenge, the opportunities to build meaningful relationships with campers, the creativity of programming, and the support offered by colleagues and administrators. Position Description: Our Camp Counselors are multi-talented individuals who love working with kids! In this dynamic role, Counselors fulfill a range of responsibilities including facilitating camp programming to small and large groups, supporting the day-to-day camp operations and logistics, serving as teacher aides during the morning enrichment classes, and supervising our childcare service before and after the camp day. Our Counselors get career ready with transferable skills including leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, program administration, conflict resolution, communication and customer service. Counselors also learn teaching and classroom management strategies and receive mentorship from experienced educators. Head Counselors take the lead with planning camp programming and schedules, organizing supplies and equipment, overseeing camper attendance and medical concerns, and serving in a mentorship role to their co-counselors. This is a temporary, full-time position for seven weeks: June 8th (start of orientation) through July 24th (end of Session 3). Counselors work an average of 35-40 hours per week, typically from 8:15am-3:45pm. Counselors assigned to Beforecare begin at 7:15am and Counselors assigned to Aftercare leave by 6:15pm. Head Counselor applicants who are available to assist with program planning on a part-time basis in late May will be given priority. - Ability to manage campers in group settings and build relationships with campers on an individual level
- Possess a high level of maturity, responsibility and accountability
- Willingness to take the initiative with a “can do” attitude
- Eager to build leadership skills and collaborate with colleagues from different backgrounds
- Head Counselors must have demonstrated ability to lead by example and mentor less experienced staff, and possess superior collaborative and problem solving skills, especially in stressful situations
