The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) provides life-saving care and relieves suffering for animal victims of cruelty and neglect who come to us through our internal partners: ASPCA Adoption Center, Kitten Nursery, Community Medicine, and Community Engagement teams; and through our external partners: NYPD and other NYC organizations. Additionally, we provide subsidized care exclusively for animals whose owners are experiencing financial hardship and would not otherwise afford veterinary care. We are staffed by one full time board-certified internist, one full time board-certified surgeon, one part-time, board-certified soft-tissue surgeon, 10 general practitioners, and 7 veterinary interns and have access to a board-certified radiologist. Our ICU provides 24-hour care with a nursing staff of licensed veterinary technicians and hospital veterinary assistants. AAH has a variety of diagnostic and treatment capabilities including but not limited to: endoscopy, ultrasound, digital radiography, dental radiography, orthopedic and soft-tissue surgery, I-STAT in-house blood chemistry analyzer, in-house coagulation testing, capnography, pulse oximetry, and EKG. In this position, the Staff Veterinarian will provide care to all hospitalized inpatients on Sundays including animals from public-owned clients and animals from our internal and external partners. They will work one-on-one with an intern to provide supervision and oversee all case management. In addition, they will oversee the admission of new patients from internal partners when the hospital is closed to the public on Sundays. The rest of the week, the Staff Veterinarian will also rotate through different services at AAH and the Animal Recovery Center (ARC) to fit operational needs. Our veterinarians currently rotate daily through surgery, treatment, dentistry, and emergency appointments. Throughout all our work at AAH, we are passionate about minimizing fear, anxiety, and stress and pain in our patients. Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Managing Medical Cases (80%): - Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of outpatients and inpatients; skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of outpatients and hospitalized animals within hospital medical parameters and budgetary guidelines
- Perform general procedures, routine and emergency surgery and high-volume dentistry
- Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients
- Practice in compliance with Fear Free guidelines
- While seeing appointments: Fulfill 30-minute appointment turnaround time
Provide In-House Veterinary Coverage (25% of medical duties): When working in the In-House Veterinarian position mid-week and on all Sundays: - Oversee admission of new patients from the ASPCA Adoption Center, kitten nursery, and CARE
- Recommend treatment plans, provide inpatient care, and oversee drop offs for procedures and diagnostics
- Provide supervision of the veterinary intern on the shelter medicine rotation
- See follow-up rechecks as needed for previous NYPD and CE cases
Provide Medical Coverage for the Animal Recovery Center- ARC (5% of medical duties): When working in ARC: - Primary case responsibility for animals involved in cruelty and neglect cases
- Perform medical intake exams and initial diagnostics for ARC NYPD and Community Engagement cases
- Attend daily rounds and make treatment plans for short and long-term care as well as euthanasia decisions
- Foster rechecks as needed
- Coordination with partner hospitals as needed
- Provide supervision of the veterinary intern on the ARC rotation
Collaboration/Mentorship (20%): - Positive participation in doctors’ meetings/ICU Rounds
- Empathetic mentorship and training of externs and interns
- Provision of medical information and hospital representation to other departments of the ASPCA, to the public, and potentially to the media
- Supervise, mentor, and collaborate with interns on Sundays to medically manage internal and publicly owned patients
Qualifications: - Ability to successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced urgent care practice, effectively multi-task with a high degree of integrity, accountability and without loss of attention to detail
- Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively and courteously with all levels of staff including licensed veterinary technicians, hospital veterinary assistants, customer service representatives and managers

- Veterinary internship or minimum 5 years small animal medicine experience without internship.
