ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, YOUNG ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT, ANNUAL GIVING
Annual Giving at Boston University is simple. Each year, alumni, students, parents, and friends choose to support everything from softballs to software at BU. These gifts are then deployed to fund research, provide emergency student assistance, pay for travel to academic conferences, and lots more throughout the year.
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving, the Associate Director of Young Alumni Engagement is a key member of the Annual Giving team. This position is chiefly responsible for developing strategies and leading programs to increase giving participation through strategic engagement outreach targeting the university's youngest alumni, a constituency of more than 70,000 graduates as of 2019. Building collaborative relationships with internal constituents both in DAR and across the University will be critical to meeting the goals and expectations of the position. Supervisory responsibilities include one full-time staff with an opportunity for growth in the future. Travel and some evening/weekend work is required.
Oversee the strategy to increase young alumni engagement and giving participation in fundraising efforts. Identify and implement best practices for engaging Young Alumni through events, digitally, strategic communications and volunteer opportunities in order to increase participation. Analyze data through customized reports in order to set Young Alumni goals, develop broad based solicitation strategies and measure outcomes stewarding donors appropriately (35%)
Utilize data analytics in making decisions involving direct marketing (mail, phone, e-mail, and text), appeals and events in order to acquire, reactivate and retain young alumni donors. Partner with Class Gift on a more structured approach to graduate students with retention as a high priority while continuing to prioritize undergraduate giving from seniors and underclassmen leading to a coordinated first year out engagement strategy. (25%)
In collaboration with Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving, develop and maintain Annual Giving volunteer programs for Young Alumni. Provide oversight, management, strategic guidance and growth of BU Young Alumni Council including coordination of in-person meetings, conference calls and various alumni and development engagement initiatives throughout the year including but not limited to Alumni Weekend, Giving Tuesday, Calendar Year-end, Giving Day, Commencement and Fiscal Year-end. Build out peer-to-peer fundraising volunteers and collaborate with other unit young alumni councils (Athletics, LAW) as appropriate and work to develop YAC's in key units (Questrom and CAS) by the end of FY21 in order to increase participation (20%)
Lead the development of strategies to increase young alumni membership in the 1839 Society. Work with DAR colleagues to constantly generate and review lists of current and prospective future leadership donors and volunteers to determine necessary steps to engage young leaders Define, document and updates plans, schedules and tactics throughout the year. Benchmark industry best practices and study peer institutions to identify new ideas for growth. Identify and personally solicit leadership annual fund gifts from young alumni (10%)
Manage one full-time staff position in Annual Giving (10%)
Bachelor's degree; masters preferred; 4-7 years of experience in annual giving, development or marketing with specific hands on experience managing facets of a large annual giving program with a complex, multi-channeled approach ideally in a higher education research institution within a campaign setting with expertise in growing young alumni participation.
Some experience in frontline fundraising with the expertise to manage a small portfolio of targeted leadership annual giving prospects collaborating with regional and school based gift officers. Must be entrepreneurial, innovative, resourceful, creative and self-motivated team player who is able to manage multiple assignments concurrently.
Some management experience of professionals performing in a fast paced, deadline driven environment with ability to motivate, grow, and retain high performers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience with using constituent databases.
The ability to manage up to senior leadership and direct supervisor meeting and exceeding expectations in a strategic, thoughtful and timely manner with a high degree of quality. Must demonstrate a talent for building and developing positive and cooperative relationships with both internal and external constituents
