Job Description Summary
This position is a core contributor to the operations of the Editorial Office of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, a monthly, peer-reviewed medical journal. Working remotely and on a part-time basis with a flexible schedule, the position reports directly to the Managing Editor and works closely with the journal editors. With minimal input from the Managing Editor, works with decision editors to consider and prepare for publication review articles and other educational content.

Drafting detailed, clear, and internally consistent revision letters by synthesizing and editing the comments of the editors and expert advisors, incorporating peer reviews, and adding requests relating to journal policy/format requirements
Acting as a resource for editors for questions concerning the consideration process
Serving as an intermediary for any correspondence between authors and editors during the consideration/revision process
Prior to acceptance, performing detailed checks to confirm manuscripts comply with journal policies, coordinating with other staff members to make sure that figure edits, copyright permissions, and other paperwork requirements are handled in a timely manner
Editing articles for intelligibility, consistency, clarity of presentation of tabular information, and compliance with editorsâ™ nomenclature and style preferences; on an occasional basis, performing substantive editing in coordination with the editors
Communicating with editors and authors to resolve any questions that arise during editing
Transmitting content to the publisher in a timely and accurate manner
Reviewing proofs to ensure content is laid out attractively and copyediting was performed appropriately
Works closely with journalâ™s social media team to post engaging educational content to the journal blog; specifically:
Maintains pipeline to ensure regular posting of content
Coordinates vetting/revision of blog content by editorial team
Edits and formats posts for consistency with blog style
At the request of the Managing Editor, provides assistance with special projects as time allows, such as overseeing handling of a journal supplement, compiling journal metrics for the editorial leadership, or providing vacation cover for other staff members.
Qualifications Bachelor's Degree with 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required, preferably in STM publishing.
Job Knowledge and Skills:
Requires excellent written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to interact in a productive and tactful manner with busy clinician-researchers; and superior project management, problem-solving, and computer literacy skills.
Must have ability to work independently, maintain scrupulous attention to detail throughout complicated and prolonged workflows, handle confidential information appropriately, and keep up to date on evolving standards in the ethics of scholarly publishing.
Must be comfortable working remotely, with most communication by email or via an online manuscript handling interface. Must have appropriate equipment to use Box Drive, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Drive.
Familiarity with Editorial Manager and AMA style are desirable.
