Job Description Summary
The Senior Writer, Special Projects will work closely with the Executive Director, Strategy, Engagement and Campaign and with the Director, Special Communications Projects in the central DAR office to design and implement critical new and emerging writing projects in support of the university's highest alumni engagement and fundraising priorities.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director for Strategy, Engagement and Campaign, the Senior Writer, Special Projects will perform as an exceptional writer, conceptual thinker, and project manager to advance the Universityâ™s mission and goals, specifically supporting the highest priority development and alumni relations initiatives at the University level.Â This individual will contribute to creative problem-solving, planning, and timely execution for an evolving portfolio of writing and communications projects, and will often work independently and in a consultative capacity around writing needs with senior staff and academic leadership across the University.
Working as key member of the Strategy, Engagement, and Campaign team, the Senior Writerâ™s projects may include conceptual frameworks for new communications initiatives, particularly pertaining to Campaign; scripts and talking points for senior leadership and highest level volunteers in conjunction with events and meetings; written case statements, collateral materials, and templated proposal language for University-level initiatives; principal gift level personalized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship materials, including proposals; and other varied and unique needs arising.
While this position reports directly to the Executive Director for Strategy, Engagement, and Campaign, the role also works closely with the larger DAR Marketing and Communications family, and should maintain a high level of internal communication and sense of collaboration and connection to all colleagues within DARMAX.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide senior-level planning and execution for mission-critical writing projects for other high-profile DAR initiatives.Â
Work closely as needed with the Office of the President, the Secretaryâ™s Office, Principal Gifts, senior DAR leadership, Development Directors in the Schools and Centers, and other University staff and faculty. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Respond to emerging and sometimes unexpected needs for timely and compelling written communications.Â Â Â Â
Produce unique and compelling messaging and print pieces for Principal Gifts to be presented to donors by the University President and other top Penn administrators.
As needed, serve as a DAR liaison with outside vendors to ensure a high standard of excellence in outsourced communications projects, which may include film.
Write Press Releases for principal gift announcements in partnership with relevant fundraising unit, including drafting and seeking approvals for leadership quotes, and implementing process for coordinating with University Communications, Principal Gifts, and relevant School or Center to arrange dissemination.
Consistently deliver high quality work within budget and in accordance with the Universityâ™s established fiscal procedures while working in a demanding, deadline-driven, multi-stakeholder environment.
Interact comfortably and effectively with top levels of the Universityâ™s leadership and faculty, as well as with valued philanthropists and high level volunteers.

Bachelorâ™s degree and five to seven years of development writing experience in a nonprofit environment, ideally higher education, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Superior writing and editing skills.
Strength in assimilating complex information and understanding multifaceted concepts and the ability to translate those concepts into compelling prose.
Experience writing campaign-related materials, case statements and major gift proposals a plus.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, highly demanding projects, while meeting deadlines.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with a high degree of competency and comfort in interacting with people at all professional levels. Ability to present ideas verbally with credibility and handle feedback gracefully are key to success.
Ability to use a database for research. Experience with project management software a plus.
