As an industrial hygienist for a self-sustaining research university we have the pleasure of supporting and providing oversight for several impressive operations on our 2,300-acre main campus. For instance, main campus has 260 major buildings and over 1,000 union and non-union employees (custodial, maintenance, and grounds) to maintain utilities, and building conditions. In addition to this labor-power Cornell contracts approximately $125 million in capital construction and major renovations annually to keep our facilities pristine and further our research mission. The Utilities Production and Energy Management teams generate, transmit, and distribute the bulk of the utilities consumed on campus: chilled water, electric, potable water, and steam. The combined heat and power facility include, two 15 MW combustion turbines with heat recovery steam generators, 5 package boilers, and two back pressure steam turbines. The chilled water facilities include Cornell's Lake Source Cooling facility and three refrigerant based Chillers. The hydroelectric plant includes the plant, dam, penstock and campus interconnection. The water filtration facility, processes 3.6 MGD of potable water which serves approximately 35,000 student, faculty and staff on a 24/7 basis.

The incumbent must effectively work independently and with a variety of diverse staff, faculty, and students. Stakeholders include facility and project managers, research community, Environmental Health & Safety Department, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the US Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other local, state and federal agencies.
The specific compliance programs assigned are identified under the Duties and Responsibilities section. All programs under this Specialist function must be in a sustainable state of "in-control and capable" functionality.
The incumbent must effectively work independently and with a variety of diverse staff, faculty, and students. Must seek to understand the university's diversity priorities and goals as well as understand that broad perspectives lead to more effective decision-making and incorporate these into their work. Must contribute to a respectful working environment. May supervise student employees and program interns.
This position will be filled at the Industrial Hygienist or Senior Industrial Hygienist level, depending on years of experience. Position's responsibilities and band will be mapped to selected candidate's qualifications.
To be considered for the Senior Industrial Hygienist position you must have a minimum of three to five years of relevant work experience; candidates with at least two to three years of relevant experience will be considered for Industrial Hygienist position.
Successful candidates must also be able to demonstrate initiative in taking ownership of their work and results; clearly and consistently communicate thoughts both verbally and in writing; exercise sound judgment while demonstrating innovative, creative and informed risk taking; be self-aware while working to continuously learn, improve, and actively manager their career; and be able to anticipate, embrace, promote and implement change.
Other required qualifications include:
A bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field is required.
Knowledge of and ability to interpret ACGIH, CDC, NIOSH, DOL standards, regulations, and exposure limits in an industrial and/or research environment.
Demonstrated experience in industrial hygiene developing sampling campaigns, performing qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments, and utilizing IH software systems to maintain records.
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) - CIH, or actively working to achieve certification.
Proven track record of being successful with limited supervision and completing work on time.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Excellent computer skills, including MS Office programs, database management, EHS software applications.
Ability to interact well with all levels of personnel within an organization
Ability to wear personal protective equipment including: air purifying & supplied air respirators, hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, and protective clothing.
Must have a valid Driver's license and a good driving record.
Ability to work and lift and/or move 20-50 pounds while wearing protective equipment and clothing, including respiratory protection devices, and have manual dexterity.
Ability to pass a background check as required by Cornell.
