The Cummings School Hospital for Large Animals at Tufts University is a full-service hospital of which the caseload is predominantly competition and pleasure horses (89%). The remaining caseload is distributed between food animal and exotic species. Sophisticated diagnostic facilities includes a pulmonary function lab, endoscopy,gastroscopy, ultrasonography, computer tomography, nuclear imaging, high-speed treadmill analysis with endoscopy, and a comprehensive veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
The Massachusetts equine clinic offers medicine and elective surgical procedures. There’s a large sports medicine caseload. The intern’s time distribution will be divided equally between Cummings school and Mass Equine, on a rotating basis.
Theprimary responsibility of the intern while at the Cummings school will be to assist clinicians and residents in receiving and evaluating patients; the intern will assist in all aspects of the management of these patients under supervision of clinicians and residents. The intern will share after-hours emergency duty on a rotating schedule with the large animal medicine and surgery residents. The intern will receive an emergency fee for all after-hours emergency cases.The intern will assist in the teaching of veterinary students and will participate in rounds, seminars, and didactic training as provided. There is a thriving research program in respiratory medicine, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in one of the many ongoing investigations.
Massachusetts equine clinic is a five-doctor equine exclusive ambulatory practice with haul-in capacity. Mass Equine has a particular emphasis on lameness, sports medicine, and elective surgery, although general medicine is a large aspect of the internship program. The caseload is approximately 9500 horses per year, including all type of equids from backyard companions including donkeys, to upper-level competition horses. Mass Equine has three hospitalizations stalls, one surgical suite, and two diagnostic suites. Examples of equipment for intern use include video endoscopes, digital ultrasound, reproductive ultrasound, digital radiography, and shockwave. The practice has a mobile unit for intern use during appointments and emergencies. The intern will have shared primary emergency coverage duties after an initial mentorship period and fulfillment of skill set requirements. Interns receive additional compensation for emergency work. Upon completion of this internship program, you will be well-prepared to enter either private practice or a residency program.
