Department Description
Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary which provides housing and food service operations to undergraduate and graduate students who live in campus facilities, and food service operations to the general campus community. SHDS is comprised of six major units (Residential and Hospitality Services, Dining Services, Office of Student Development (OSD), Inclusion & Organizational Development, Business and Financial Services, and Facilities Services), operates three campus departments (Design Services, Orientation, and Fall Welcome), and provides services and support relating to academic development and student success.
SHDS provides over 10,000 bed spaces used by UC Davis students. Orientation provides services to approximately 6000 incoming first-year and transfer students, and their families, per year. All SHDS residents may utilize Student Housing academic services. All UC Davis students are invited to participate in Fall Welcome events. Conference Housing hosts over 4000 guests each summer. The Multimedia Specialist supports SHDS through the creation of aesthetically appealing, accurate, and engaging video and photography to market SHDS services, events, opportunities, and educational information to key target audiences. The Multimedia Specialist also is responsible for the teaching, training, mentoring and supervision of the student videographer and student photographer, and for ensuring university, divisional and departmental standards are followed.
JOB SUMMARY
The Multimedia Specialist is an experienced professional who applies education, experience and problem-solving skill to conceptualize, write, produce, shoot, edit and develop multimedia, video, and audio, create slideshows, and capture still image photography for Student Housing and Dining Services that engage and motivate customers to use or contract with department services.
Under general supervision of the Associate Director, Departmental and Student Outreach, use multimedia production and photography knowledge, skill, best practices and industry-standard software to create, and lead a student team in the creation of, multimedia and photography for distribution in print and electronic formats, work on multiple concurrent projects, perform in-house production work, and oversee and coordinate pre- and post-production of projects. Multimedia and photography creation includes conceiving, evaluating, designing, writing, editing, producing, and procuring content, both visual and written; creating project briefs, writing scripts and developing storyboards; recommending and/or selecting appropriate solutions; and coordinating and collaborating with departmental and campus staff.
Lead, train, teach, develop, mentor, manage and oversee student photographer and student videographer positions, ensuring projects are completed on time and according to department and project requirements. Schedule, lead and oversee photography and videography shoots, attend programs and events, and participate in educational opportunities.
The Multimedia Specialist is responsible for ensuring university, divisional and departmental video and photography standards are followed and, as appropriate and in partnership with key colleagues, determine, design and/or advise on departmental video and photography standards; maintaining, organizing, overseeing, training and advising on, and enforcing video and photography file standards including file builds, best practices, file versioning, and file storage and archiving.
The Multimedia Specialist also supports SHDS with the development and execution of a variety of other projects and initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Experience conceptualizing projects; experience planning, coordinating and leading the development of promotional materials.
Experience leading and performing pre-production, including storyboarding and script development; writing interesting, engaging content; planning and setting up video and photography shoots; planning, coordinating and adhering to production schedules and deadlines; and estimating costs.
Experience coordinating and producing engaging videos and photography, video development and editing, film production, and audio recording for visual storytelling and branding and marketing goals that are relevant to the target audiences.
Experience using industry-standard software (Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, and Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, etc.) to perform post-production, including editing raw footage and photography, composing scenes, and working with audio to develop and produce high quality video, audio and photography.
Extensive experience selecting, acquiring, operating and training others to operate sophisticated video, audio and still photography equipment including digital and analog cameras, lenses, filters, tripods, exposure meters, lighting equipment, microphones and other audio equipment to record, capture and produce professional-quality video, audio and photography.
Extensive experience with photography and demonstrated expertise with photography principles including scene composition; ISO/light management; selecting the most appropriate lenses, filters, and proper aperture and shutter speeds to photograph a variety of scene and subject types.
Experience interviewing diverse subjects on video; interpersonal and oral communication skill to work effectively with video subjects; written and verbal communication skills to communicate complex subjects to participants and stakeholders of various levels of knowledge; skills to synthesize and apply ideas, direction and feedback from multiple stakeholders.
Preferred:
Experience teaching, training, leading and mentoring videographers and photographers in a professional setting.
Experience recruiting, identifying and supervising student videographers and photographers.
Ability to save, store, reference, archive video, audio and photography assets, that multiple users can access and use, according to a repeatable, manageable, maintainable process; knowledge of pros and cons of working on a local PC versus on a server through a network.
Ability to lead, teach, manage and assign workload to student employees; to oversee their work such that they create usable content that is on time, relevant, meets established stylistic, journalist and visual standards, and is formatted according to established guidelines so that it may be stored, revised and reused by multiple staff members.
Experience and knowledge to deploy content in a variety of digital environments including social media, websites and video distribution channels; knowledge of functions and limitations of YouTube, iTunes, iTunesU, Vimeo, Instagram and other third-party multimedia delivery services; communication skills to advise and teach colleagues to deploy, host, reference and use digital video and audio content stored in multimedia delivery services.
Experience designing, managing and enforcing production workflows, file design standards, and asset archival processes and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to identify, translate and communicate the business requirements of a project, consider resources and limitations, and persuade and lead stakeholders to the best solution.
Skill to write creative and grammatically correct copy.
Experience working effectively in a service-oriented team environment.
Experience working in a large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities, such as government or a higher education institution.
Experience working effectively and competently with a culturally diverse workforce and constituency.
