Position Overview: Liberal Arts Technologies and Innovation Services (LATIS) provides liberal arts-specific expertise, facilities, and technology services to support the innovative work of the CLA community. We further the college’s mission by partnering with faculty, staff, and students to enhance learning, advance research and creative work, and improve processes.
Our Enhancing Learning (EL) unit supports the thoughtful integration of technology into teaching and learning for the college. EL services are as follows: online, blended, and technology-enhanced design for courses and curricula; digital arts, sciences and humanities (DASH); academic innovation grants for faculty; emerging educational technologies; digital literacies; video production; digital content curation; learning analytics; and consultations on technology and pedagogy.
Position Summary: We seek a Director of Enhanced Learning who is a: * Strategic leader who can initiate student-centered change in a major research university setting. * Relationship builder who understands the faculty perspective and can establish trust with instructors, department chairs, and deans. * Experienced innovator who can enhance student learning within our large, complex college, and across the University. * Creative collaborator who can extend connections with faculty, with peers, and with other units into effective support systems. * Advocate for the liberal arts, for student learning, and for making student experiences rewarding. * Passionate developer of diverse and inclusive teams that get things done. * Technology realist who can see through the hype and move the college forward in online learning in an effective manner that reflects the values of the College.
Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership (50%) - Interpret the vision and direction for the College set by academic leaders, help CLA reimagine the liberal arts for the 21st century, and guide the continuing development of CLA’s emerging online learning strategy. - Advise College leaders (i.e., CIO, Dean, Associate Deans, Chairs, etc.) on trends, opportunities, and challenges in student learning, pedagogy, and instructional technology. - Partner with CLA Office of Research and Graduate Programs and University units to support the development of new graduate programs - Partner with CLA Undergraduate Education to develop and implement plans to meet the College’s goals on student retention, student learning outcomes, and strategic initiatives such as Career Readiness. - Lead actively in the University’s academic technology community by convening the conversations needed to solve cross-college/cross-unit challenges. - Advocate for digital literacy, career readiness, and the enhancement of the CLA curriculum through digital humanities, investing in pedagogies unique to the liberal arts. - Develop inclusive and participatory processes to help lead a complex community through changes.
Service Management (50%) - Manage an evolving portfolio of services designed to meet the needs of a wide-ranging CLA curriculum, a diverse student population, and the unique needs of academic departments - Negotiate and advocate on behalf of CLA instructors and students for effective services from University partners (e.g., central IT, Libraries, Provost Office, etc.) - Cultivate diverse and inclusive teams that prioritize high quality customer support - Creatively invest unit budget and other resources to develop instructors, stimulate innovation, and enhance student learning - Provide oversight on projects and initiatives through nascent stages to implementation to ensure goals and deadlines are met - Spearhead grounded information-gathering, evaluation, and needs analysis to inform unit and collegiate strategies.
At a minimum, a qualified candidate will have:
4 years of progressively more responsible leadership experience in an education setting
A qualified candidate will also demonstrate experience and competence in:
Strategic thinking and planning
Promoting diverse and inclusive work environments and services
Leading projects that use technology to solve educational challenges and elevate the student experience
Supervising teams of technical and/or discipline-specific experts
Communicating effectively in an educational setting
We realize no single candidate will have all of the preferred qualifications; however, the most desirable candidates will be able to demonstrate a track record of success by blending at least some of the following:
A liberal arts background, either studying or working in a liberal arts field or college
An advanced degree in the liberal arts or in education
Expertise with technologies used in social sciences, humanities, and/or fine arts
Teaching experience, especially in online or blended formats
Work experience at a higher education institution
Expertise in one or more academic technology fields: learning analytics, instructional design, course development, instructional technology, emerging technology
Experience effectively using data to inform service improvements
Many years of experience managing collaborative and effective teams
Navigating complex, distributed organizational structures and institutional bureaucracies
