Under moderate supervision, set up, conduct studies, and contribute to research projects following established protocols, including the appropriate recording of data and reporting of standard or variant results. Primary responsibility for management of colony of experimental mice, including all genotyping and maintenance of database. Responsible for ordering of supplies and equipment and overall laboratory functionality. Assist in other laboratory and research functions as required.
The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics (MPB) is a basic science department in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. The department has been consistently ranked in the top three physiology departments in the nation based on funding from the National Institutes of Health, as well NRC ranking of related graduate programs. Faculty in the department use diverse cutting edge techniques to address important research questions that span the spectrum of biomedical sciences
Key Functions and Expected Performance:
Management of animal colony
Genotyping of all mice and maintenance of associated database
Develop new and modify existing methodology/protocols.
Instruct departmental personnel and laboratory users on technical procedures
Histochemistry (brain tissue histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization etc)
Tissue collection, dissection, storage and biochemical assays
Record, compile, interpret, and communicate data/results.
Follow University safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, biohazardous materials, and/or carcinogens)
Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions..
Carry out work with proper aseptic technique.
Provide appropriate written/oral documentation of experiments
Maintain inventory of consumables, clean glassware/lab space, prepare and aliquot stock solutions. Assist in the efficient operation of the lab.
Shared participation in laboratory operation and inventory is expected such as stocking lab supplies and preparing reagents and buffers for general lab use.
Expertise in sample processing and submission to core for analysis.
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
Bachelors in Biology or related field necessary
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community is strongly preferred
General lab experience is preferred
Knowledge of, and experience with, histological procedures, mouse colony management, immunohistochemistry, sterile techniques, microscopy, digital imaging, or computer maintenance is preferred
