The UNC Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC) is looking for a motivated, well-written and spoken, organized, communications professional to join the communications team at HSRC. An ideal candidate will have experience working (or a high degree of interest working) in an academic research environment and interest in thinking strategically about growing the reach of projects and initiatives.
The ideal candidate will be creative, driven and a self-starter, comfortable supporting and leading communications and marketing tasks for HSRC and its many projects, programs, research findings and activities for both state and national projects, campaigns and initiatives in a variety of transportation focus areas (e.g. Vision Zero for Youth, the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety, and Highway Safety Information System). This person will also support reporting needs for projects and the Center, as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent attention to detail in project management and writing/editing tasks, time management, and show an ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
The ability to develop and lead marketing activities with a thorough understanding of marketing principles and techniques; strong writing skills, including the ability to write and edit various communications materials (e.g. reports, collateral for conferences, web content); ability to manage special events (in-person and remote); strong verbal skills, including the ability to represent HSRC and other clients/projects in a professional manner at conferences, special events and meetings; ability to maintain websites using various CMS programs; the ability to work independently to meet project deadlines; ability to build good working relationships with different audiences/groups, including following up to attain needed information for materials/reports; and strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate the following:
Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
Ability to creatively brainstorm, draft and edit strategic communications and marketing materials, including: newsletter articles, announcements, presentations, annual reports, social media posts, and fact sheets;
Ability to support and execute strategic communications plans (and related tasks/activities);
Event planning coordination and management skills (in-person and digital);
Ability to manage multiple projects with acute attention to detail, prioritize workload and meet deadlines;
Ability to develop, edit and maintain content for websites (using various CMS programs) and social media;
High degree of familiarity with, or be a quick study on, a wide variety of communications platforms and tools (e.g., GoToMeeting, MailChimp, YouTube, social media, WordPress, etc.).
Ability to travel occasionally and represent projects in a professional manner; and
Flexible and able to adjust quickly to shifting priorities.
The candidate must have the ability to work within a research environment and adhere to UNC communication and privacy policies.
Our ideal candidate will come into the position with solid professional experience and communications/marketing perspective and a desire to learn new skills. The candidate will be comfortable in both lead and contributory roles within HSRC, possess excellent attention to detail in project management and writing/editing tasks, show an ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently, as well as have an interest in leading basic partnership development activities.
Other preferred qualifications include: hands on experience running webinar software (i.e. GoToMeeting) and using various CMS programs (e.g. WordPress and Dreamweaver); and managing social media accounts (e.g. Facebook and Twitter) for projects/organizations.
In addition to the above, the ideal candidate will have experience:
Implementing strategic communications plans and disseminating research information to target audiences;
Writing and editing documents to align with specific organizational styles, guidelines and rules;
Identifying and/or developing relationships with potential funders/sponsors;
Working (or a high degree of interest working) in an academic research environment;
Coordinating and managing in-person and digital events, including annual meetings, symposiums, webinars, trainings, conferences, etc.;
Developing ideas for and leading marketing activities through social media channels (e.g., Twitter and Facebook);
Managing the production of print materials, from concept and writing to finished project;
Translating research or technical information for the general public;
Copy editing of final reports and proposals
Using, or be a quick study on, a wide variety of communications platforms and tools (e.g., GoToMeeting, MailChimp, YouTube, social media, WordPress, etc.)
At least three years of experience in a professional setting or educational equivalent is preferred, at least 5 years is ideal.
