The digital fabrication lab (FABLab) manager coordinates all of the daily operations of the fabrication lab, its services, staff, and related spaces/equipment. The FABLab manager reports to the FABLab faculty director and consults with the director on the overall goals and priorities for the lab. They coordinate and instruct the FABLab research associate(s) on duties relating to facilitating students and faculty sponsored research projects in the lab along with FABLab related courses and other courses that use FABLab amenities.
The FABLab manager will oversee the design, development, and implementation of training materials, procedures, and spaces for the lab resources to be used by lab assistants, students, and faculty working in the lab. In addition, the FABLab manager will develop and implement the necessary training for the FABLab research associate(s) to perform their duties.
The FABLab manager will hire and coordinate the training of a team of up to 30 lab assistants each semester to provide students and faculty with the standard FABLab services. This includes developing machine and software training documentation for each position, managing weekly shift schedules, time approval, and job workflows.
The FABLab manager also contributes to lab and faculty sponsored research, including software and hardware development utilizing the fabrication equipment. This includes design/development, fabrication, integration, and maintenance of tooling and accessories to be used with lab equipment/work-cells.
The FABLab manager is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all FABLab spaces inside the college and the adjacent service drive. He/she ensures that these spaces are kept to fire-code and OSHA standards throughout the semester for the safe operation of all the machines, as well as operating as the FABLab’s representative to the Lab Safety Committee. Additionally this includes managing card access to all FABLab related spaces and computers, managing material storage and project space, and coordinating all groups of people that will be using the lab, its space or equipment.
Under general direction of the FABLab faculty director manage and oversee day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Fabrication Lab equipment and resources.
Assist students and faculty in developing, designing, and conducting research and coursework related to the FABLab, along with designing/implementing the necessary lab infrastructure for the work..
Work with the FABLab faculty director to develop space plans and workcells for FABLab services and ongoing research.
Train FABLab Research Associate to perform duties related to equipment maintenance; parts and material sourcing; tool design and development; machine operation (3-axis CNC router, 5-axis CNC router, CNC water jet, laser cutters, 3D printers, 3-axis HAAS mill, Kuka robots, 5-ton Gantry (coordinate training with OSEH), fork-lift); computer software (Mastercam, Rhino, Adobe Suite, Grab CAD); lab assistant management; work-cell development.
Hire, train, and manage staff of 30 lab assistants.
Oversee and coordinate the development of training procedures for students in the form of written/electronic documentation and tutorials for standard lab operations.
Produce/update content related to FABLab machines/space for Taubman College website.
Manage card-reader access to lab space for all people engaging with the FABLab.
Assist with any and all FABLab related construction projects, renovations, and job proposals.
Occasionally contribute to authoring of articles and grant proposals and supervise research support personnel.
Other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in architecture
1-3 years of relevant experience in an architecture digital fabrication lab, including supervisory experience
1-3 years of architecture research project experience as a principal investigator, co-investigator, project manager, or research associate
Ability and willingness to work some evenings in accordance with research project needs
