Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Diversity Communications for the Division of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement. This position develops a cohesive/best practices communications strategy that integrates traditional, digital, visual, and emerging media to support campus-wide communication efforts and initiatives, that strategically advance efforts to nurture and cultivate diversity and inclusion as key institutional values through comprehensive campus engagement. The position is responsible for the diversity website and coordinates communication initiatives with schools and offices throughout Rutgers University – New Brunswick showcasing programming and initiatives that foster an inclusive campus experience for faculty, students, and staff.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Creates, plans, and executes communications initiatives that serve to promote internal and external awareness of the diversity as a key institutional value.
Strategically advances an inclusive campus climate through media engagement that features and leverages diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across the University.
Writes, designs, edits and distributes materials that promote understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity goals and efforts at Rutgers-New Brunswick.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's degree in communications, public relations, visual design, psychology, sociology, college student personnel, higher education administration or similar program.
Minimum of three (3) years of higher education or relevant industry experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Possess excellent interpersonal skills and cultural competencies in order to interact with a wide range of individuals, including undergraduates, graduate students, senior faculty and administrators.
Must possess outstanding communication and presentation skills, including superior skills in writing, translating complex concepts for a general audience, and a strong graphic and design sense as well as overall aptitude for understanding and communicating about complex and sensitive diversity, equity and inclusion topics in ways that are interesting and relevant to a wide range of audiences.
Working knowledge of website design and related technologies (including analytic tools, and website usability testing), broadcast emails, various social and other multimedia applications, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Vimeo, etc.
Proven ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including highly knowledgeable technical staff.
Ability to multi-task, and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate success in overseeing complex projects in an institutional setting, ensuring timely communication to relevant parties (e.g. funders, superiors, stakeholders, etc.), managing conflicts and challenges that arise, resulting in successful implementation.
Must have strong supervisory skills to select, lead, and motivate staff (including student workers and volunteers) as well as a highly collaborative style with the energy, maturity and leadership to serve as a unifying force.
Experience in photography and video editing as well as mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign) and Drupal 8.
Demonstrated success in stewarding campus-wide communication efforts.
Five (5) years of higher education or relevant industry experience.
