Philosophy of Internship: Stillwater Equine has had a successful internship program for over 10 years. The goal of our program is to provide the intern with the skills, knowledge and confidence to successfully enter private practice upon completion of the internship. Mentors will provide guidance and share their experience to help the intern develop their art of equine practice with foundations in quality medicine, compassionate customer service and excellent communication.
Internship Duties: Interns will rotate between ambulatory and in-clinic duties. On ambulatory, interns will ride along with the 5 senior veterinarians, gaining hands-on experience with routine reproductive work, neonatal evaluation, lameness exams and sports medicine, preventative medicine appointments, dentistry, and pre-purchase exams. While in hospital, interns will work with Dr. Arnesen on both surgical and medicine cases. Interns will provide daily exams and treatments on in-hospital patients and have daily rounds regarding their care. Interns are encouraged to participate fully in hospital cases, recommending and performing diagnostics, creating and following through with treatment plans, as well as communicating with clients and maintaining medical records. While in hospital, interns will be trained in anesthesia and will perform anesthesia for elective and emergency surgeries. On call duty is split between the interns. Each intern will be on-call two nights per week and two weekends per month. Initially, the intern will be assisted with emergencies by a senior veterinarian. As the intern's skills develop, they will see emergencies independently. A senior veterinarian is always available for guidance or assistance as needed.
About the Practice: Stillwater Equine has been offering comprehensive care for horses since 1975. As a regional referral hospital, there is a high case load with a wide variety of surgical, medical and ambulatory experiences. There are six senior veterinarians on staff as well as two current interns. Dr. Arnesen performs soft tissue, orthopedic and arthroscopic surgeries. The practice has multiple DR systems as well as multiple digital ultrasounds, an in-house lab, therapeutic laser, shockwave, and a portable endoscope and gastroscope. Sports medicine is an important part of the practice and we offer PRP, IRAP and stem cells in conjunction with joint injections and complementary therapies. Reproductive services offered include embryo flushes, stallion collection in addition to management of mares for cooled and frozen semen. A board certified ophthalmologist sees equine cases at the clinic as well.
