Position Summary: Support and assist the Transmission Design Engineering section. Responsible for the analysis and detailed design of high voltage transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 345kV. May give direction to subordinate Engineers, Drafters, clerical personnel, Engineering Technicians and Engineering Assistants and assume such authority as may be delegated. Perform other duties as required.
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: Prepare and/or review PLS-CADD modeling, structure and foundation designs, clearance checks, plan and profile development, assembly drawings, framing drawings, Right-of-way drawings, material specifications and procurement, manufacture shop drawings and design calculations, conductor thermal ratings, constructability evaluations, permitting, and project schedules. Detailed knowledge of design codes including NESC, ACI and RUS. Prepare and maintain company transmission line engineering and design standards. Troubleshoot and provide solutions to transmission line related problems. Provide transmission design and application knowledge to other company departments. Attend contractor bid and construction meetings to assist in ensuring that work activities are performed in accordance with plans, specifications and schedule. Provide field support during construction. Manage and support transmission engineering consultants in cases where design services are outsourced. Become multi-disciplined with knowledge of existing and future technologies. Attend technical conferences, meetings or perform other requirements to maintain professional engineering continuing education requirements (Project Engineer). Assist in project management by performing detailed engineering and economic studies, estimating labor, materials and construction costs of projects. Prepare conceptual design options including economic conductor and pole analysis.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Engineer I: Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize time/workload to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to coordinate assignments and handle multiple complex tasks concurrently. Ability to self-motivate, working independently and as part of a team. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, both internal and external and establish credibility with Engineering Department and others. Skill and ability to use Microsoft Office products for word processing, reporting, spreadsheets, database, and e-mails. Knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation design, reinforced concrete design, structural analysis and Structural steel design. Engineer II: Advanced level of expertise in operating the Power Line Systems software suite, including PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE. Advanced level of understanding of thermal ratings and conductor behavior. Advanced level of understanding of structural loading and the ability to create structure load trees. Ability to design drilled piers using L-Pile software. Ability to lead and direct subordinate group members in the development of engineering drawings. Ability to review structure manufacture design calculations for conformance to Brazos design specifications. Engineer III: Ability to lead a project team through the complete design process of a transmission line (69kV to 345kV) using PLS-CADD and other related software. Ability to lead the creation of pole, material, and construction bid packages. Ability to lead the creation of construction documents including plan and profiles drawings, structure loading trees and foundation drawings. Ability to lead outside engineering consultants through the detailed design of transmission line projects. Ability to lead, coordinate and schedule efforts of outside contractors and vendors, including surveyors, geotechnical consultants, pole manufactures, material manufactures, ROW clearing contactors and line contractors. Ability to solve difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques and procedures. Ability to provide leadership to facilitate project completion, to train and mentor other engineers. Project Engineer: All of the above in addition to Texas P.E. registration.
Education and Experience Requirements: Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from an ABET accredited university. Bachelor of Science degrees in other engineering disciplines from an ABET accredited university with previous technical work designing HV transmission lines or education in civil engineering will be considered. Engineer I – Entry level, no experience required. Engineer II – Two (2) years of experience equivalent to Engineer I (minimum). Engineer III – Two (2) years of experience equivalent to Engineer II (minimum). Engineer–Project - Same as Engineer III, and requires TBPE Registration as a Professional Engineer.
Physical and Environmental Requirements: The position requires working inside in a controlled environment and occasionally outside in varying weather conditions, sitting for extended periods of time, working overtime and traveling at times with short notice, hearing within normal range, hearing aids are permitted, vision within normal range, corrective lens are permitted and a valid driver’s license.
