The Communications Specialist, reporting to the IHPI Director of Communications, will be responsible for helping to effectively communicate IHPI stories/content with internal and external audiences. This individual will also work closely with the Senior Communication Specialist and the Media Relations Manager.
The communications specialist will be able to work within a small communications team in a high-volume environment. S/he will be self-motivated, organized, responsive and a creative thinker who understands the value of communications in driving engagement and awareness. The communication specialist will be able to translate complex ideas and topics for internal and external audiences in relatable ways, with the ability to write articles that will cross over traditional and digital communications channels.
As part of a dynamic team, the successful candidate will be able to contribute to the writing, editing and disseminating of complex health and healthcare stories and other content; be able to contribute to the production and dissemination of online and print material, e.g., email, website, social media, newsletters, articles and presentations, while ensuring all materials correctly convey organizational message
Provide project support on a variety of communications activities and backup to communications team members as needed
Possesses the foundational skills for developing, curating, and managing content for websites including the IHPI website and the National Poll on Healthy Aging website, and others as needed; work with vendor(s) on web-related issues and improvements
Manage tracking of summary report for communications measurement, including media monitoring, web and social media analytics; evaluate the effectiveness and feedback of communications and recommend improvements with assistance and input from the larger communications and marketing team
Create and manage digital sign content for displays
Assist in creating and editing IHPI’s monthly internal and external electronic newsletters
Assist in the creation of email campaigns for distribution of monthly National Poll on Healthy Aging report and other priority research
Manage IHPI’s Constant Contact distribution list(s) and the daily monitoring of the main IHPI email account
Manage the application process and assist in the creation of winner’s research briefs for the annual IHPI Impact Accelerator Awards
Coordinate and collaborate with other communicators across campus for effective dissemination of IHPI related news and content
Bachelor's degree (preferably in communication, journalism, or marketing)
3-5 years of experience in communications and marketing
Strong knowledge of current and emerging communication and marketing best practices
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Experience in proofreading and editing (proficiency in AP style preferred)
Basic understanding of how content management systems work (Drupal, Word Press, etc.) and how to create and edit content
Experience with e-newsletter creation and management, preferably using Constant Contact
Excellent verbal, written and organizational skills with superb attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize work and problem solve, develop good working relationships with internal and external constituency groups and to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment
An understanding of health-related research, health policy, or healthcare delivery
An interest in policy and media communications and dissemination
