As a member of the External Relations team, the Executive Communications Manager joins a team of dynamic professional charged with communicating the mission, reputation, brand key differentiators and program offerings of the University of Michigan-Dearborn through a variety of channels to diverse audiences. The Executive Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director of Communications & Marketing and is charged with developing and implementing effective communications plans/activities that support key strategic initiatives of the university.
The Executive Communications Manager develops a wide range of communications on behalf of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Chancellor for a variety of stakeholder groups including, the university community, U-M Board of Regents, civic groups, businesses, members of the legislature and others at the local, state and national levels.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Chancellor, Chief of Staff and Vice Chancellor for External Relations and in collaboration with the University Communications and Marketing team and Institutional Advancement team to craft communications, including correspondence, formal speeches, presentations, and other collateral materials for the Chancellor.
Manage the research, planning, preparation and execution of internal and external chancellor communications including speeches, messages, briefings, reports, correspondence and op-eds on major issues in higher education.
Work closely with the chancellor to gather information to synthesize and finalize drafts.
Prepare the chancellor for media interviews by coordinating interview details, prepping key messages, handling necessary follow-up.
Represent the Chancellor’s Office as requested with internal and external editors, special event organizers, and others requesting public appearances and related communications by the University Chancellor.
Identify executive communications engagement opportunities that amplify UM-Dearborn’s brand awareness and the chancellor's thought leadership.
Collaborate with the content/writing team in University Communications and Marketing to assure chancellor messaging and priorities are integrated in all appropriate communications.
Manage a chancellor communications editorial calendar.
Assist with the chancellor’s social media and collaborate with the University social media specialist.
Maintain and oversee the Office of the Chancellor web and digital content; maintain biographies for the chancellor and ensure that the chancellor’s website and web assets including videos, messages and speeches are updated.
Ensure the accuracy of all facts and details in speeches, statements and quotes issued on behalf of the chancellor and official statements on behalf of the Chancellor’s Office.
Follow issues, trends, and developments in higher education and reflect them in prepared communications.
Assist in formulating and evaluating the effectiveness of university communications, public relations and marketing strategies.

A bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications or a related liberal arts field is required.
5+ years progressively responsible experience, including executive-level writing and communications experience and speechwriting for a high-level executive.
Outstanding writing, proofreading and editing skills with a proven ability to create content that engages a variety of audiences.
Communicate complex and nuanced information in a simple, compelling way.
Conduct and report research and provide context and examples that bring stories to life.
Build productive, collaborative relationships with staff, students and faculty.
Maintain a high level of discretion and excellent judgment and work with and manage confidential information.
Meet the chancellor’s expectations for written style and content and to accept and respond to revisions and advice rapidly and effectively.
Manage multiple projects, work independently and meet tight deadlines.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and comfort utilizing website content management systems.
Must be professional, service oriented, creative, self-motivated, highly organized, team player.
Experience at, or familiarity with, institutions of higher education strongly preferred.
