The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University invites applications for the tenured faculty position of Knight Chair in Digital Media Strategy, with the rank of full Professor.
Medill’s Knight Chair was established in 1999 in order to bring journalists of the highest professional reputation into the University from the news industry, and only those persons whose credentials would qualify them for appointment for full professor with tenure will be considered. The successful applicant thus will have a history of accomplishment that has broken new ground in the field and/or led the profession, essentially creating new knowledge for, and demonstrated impact and influence upon, the media industry. The precise nature of the work is not as important as that it is unique, and that it exists in a tangible, non-proprietary form.
The Knight Chair is expected to be a leader within the faculty; a visible spokesperson for Medill on issues occurring at the intersection of journalism, media, and digital technology; and a person whose ideas can help to shape the school’s approach to educating students for a rapidly changing future. Thought leadership on issues such as the intersection of journalism, media, technology, and democracy; the impact on media professionals and consumers of the accelerating adoption of tools like artificial intelligence; and the underlying economics of the media business all are within the scope of this position.
The Chair is expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, taking on existing courses and creating new ones as required as the media environment continues to evolve. The Chair also will mentor and advise students at either level; produce first-rate journalism and/or research; and perform professional service within the school, university, and community. Medill is a professional school, and thus the successful candidate will be able to integrate theory and professional practice, making research actionable for professionals across the industry.
The Chair may also be expected to perform selected administrative duties, including but not limited to those involving Medill’s curriculum in San Francisco. The Chair may be asked to assist the Dean of Medill in raising funds to further the research aims of the school and of the Chair, and to collaborate with faculty across the University as opportunities arise. National and international travel with students is a possibility.
The anticipated date of this appointment, which will be based in Evanston, Illinois, is September 1, 2020. Applications must be received no later than Dec. 15, 2019, though it is expected that applications will remain open until the position is filled. Required documents include a full CV/resume; a cover letter; and a separate statement of interest in this position that addresses the requirements listed above, including links to and/or copies of work that demonstrate the required level of impact on the field. Questions should be directed to Jenna Braunstein email@example.com
