The mission of University Advancement (UA) is to secure support for Michigan State University in terms of money, talent, service and advocacy by delivering an integrated program of communications, marketing and engagement. Our objective is to build deep and long-term relationships with alumni and other stakeholders and potential partners that will ensure increased support in the future.
University Advancement is the primary fundraising and alumni relations organization for Michigan State University. Principal among the assets that supports the efforts of Advancement is the data and information systems team. The Data and Reporting arm of the Business Analytics team is a critical component of the Advancement Information Systems and Donor Strategy unit within University Advancement.
A valued member of the University Advancement Business Analytics, Data and Training Services Team, the Ad-Hoc Report Writer and Data Analyst is responsible for but not limited to preparing, developing, modifying complex datasets and as well as project management and documentation of recurring request conversion projects in support the strategic objectives of University Advancement.
The Business Analytics, Data, and Training Services (BADTS) team is responsible for meeting the analytics, data, and training services requirements for University Advancement. Their responsibilities include understanding the business rules for managing data in our Advance database, delivering ad-hoc reporting using SQL and Cognos, and understanding the reporting frameworks that are created by the BI Architect. Additionally, they are responsible for working with UA and IT stakeholders to understand business goals and requirements in order to quickly deploy reports and analytics that enable better decision making. The Report Writer and Data Analyst will provide development, testing, and support throughout the report development lifecycle.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Data and Reporting, key responsibilities of the Ad-Hoc Report Writer and Data Analyst include, but are not limited to, the following:

Adhoc Reports Development
Understand University Advancement, AIS & DS and BADTS policies and procedures.
Analyze business needs to develop and edit queries reports written with SQL and Cognos for University Advancement audiences.
Work with users from a variety of business areas in identifying and developing queries and reports.
React quickly to changing business demands.
Canned Reports Testing
Testing technical changes and enhancements produced by the Business Intelligence and Information Systems team.
Provide support and best practices for BADTS team, Executive Leadership, and alumni relations and fundraising staff.
Unit/Sub-Unit Managers - to answer questions, explain proposed technology solutions, resolve problems, and exchange information.
Customers - to clarify issues; design reports; answer questions; provide training; explain work, systems and technologies; resolve problems and exchange information.
Co-workers- to answer questions, resolve problems, coordinate work, provide training in area(s) of specialization and exchange information.
Information Technology Professionals - to discuss projects, review work, resolve problems and exchange information.
Designated Supervisor/Project Leader - to receive assignments and direction, answer questions, discuss work and exchange information.
Suppliers - to review products, resolve problems and exchange information
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business, Statistics or Mathematics with relevant course work in computer programming; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience information technology specialization related to Report Writing and Data Analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or the knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program with similar relevant coursework; experience working with complex relational databases; experience managing data acquisition and data organization; proficient with SQL (1 year minimum); proficient with Cognos versions 8-10 (1 year minimum); training for Proficiency with Cognos Business Intelligence products such as Business Insight Advanced, Workspace Advanced, Query Studio, or Report Studio is required; experience creating multi-prompt Cognos reports with drill-thru capabilities; above average capabilities with basic tools of Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access and Word); strong analytical and problem solving skills; ability to clearly present solutions in business terms (in a non-technical nature); capacity to create new ideas for data and reporting solutions to address customers' business needs; able to work independently, and as part of a team; familiarity with Ellucian Advance system; strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are desired.
May require valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.

This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
Work hours are 8 AM to 5 PM with some nights and weekends.
