The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences.
MCS is seeking a Facilities Manager who will be responsible for managing a secure, highly complex research and teaching building (Mellon Institute). In this role, you will recommend, adapt and implement processes and procedures pertaining to the operation of the Mellon Institute (MI) and manage the building as a whole (not just MCS occupied space). Activities will include execution of physical moves, space allocation, work orders, security, construction and special events. You will collaborate with various university offices such as Facility Management Service (FMS), Campus Design and Facility Development (CDFD) and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).
Core responsibilities include:
Working with various departments on maintenance and security. Initiating work orders, trouble shooting problems, assisting with space assignments including handling keys, office logistics, purchases furniture, carpeting, painting, etc.
Identifying areas for improvement. Making independent decisions regarding use of maintenance budget. May negotiate space swaps, expansion or contraction of research and office space
Working with EH&S and University Police to ensure that building occupants are safe and secure while balancing the need for access. Ensuring that occupants have the proper laboratory training and that spaces are designed with safety in mind.
Acting as emergency contact for building in case of flood, fire, emergencies. Handling the swipe card access system for employees, students, visitors and contractors.
Serving as a liaison for construction projects in Mellon Institute and Wean Hall, assisting the new faculty with design considerations, project budget, space constraints. Working with CDFD project manager to provide guidance to faculty on building systems such as electrical power, fume hoods, air handling, equipment requirements, chemical storage, and specialized research facilities.
Assisting with logistics for special events ensuring that work orders are submitted, and personnel are on hand to meet program deadlines. May assist with audio-visual needs and room setups for lectures, conferences, musical performances, commencement and other similar events. Ensuring that equipment is operational, and space is user ready.
Managing building services including the MI Stores, MI Post Office, food services, property and space inventory.
Communicating with building occupants on facilities related issues
