University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking an Assistant Director of UMB Projects. The Assistant Director of UMB Projects will assist with strategic direction and leadership to the Facilities department through the development, enhancement, and guidance of staff members who manage all campus renovation and infrastructure construction projects for the University. They will directly supervise a staff of 8-12 Project Managers/ Sr. Project Managers and be responsible for a Construction Program of approximately $33M on the UMB campus. The Assistant Director collaborates with upper level administrators and other directors within the business unit and throughout the campus in order to ensure the delivery of high quality service.

Responsible for campus construction project operations and compliance activities that support long-term University plans. Prepare project budgets and reports on project progress. Manage the regular publication of summary reports and serves as an information resource to coworkers, the university, and external figures.
Direct strategic initiatives for UMB campus projects and is responsible for short- and long-term design and construction goals and direction that have internal and external impact. Identify strategic decisions for each project to be made based upon goals and objectives.
Guide, challenge, and motivate staff to achieve long- term project goals and plans. Work with leadership on short- and long-term critical project issues, plans, and strategic goals. Develop and implement performance monitoring and measurement protocols, and establish improvement procedures for individual project managers according to their needs to maximize individual performance.
Meet with client representatives at the individual schools and administrative units to review project status, department performance, and to identify unit's short anf long term design and construction needs.
Develop, disseminate, and approve standard operating procedures, guidelines, policies, processes, protocols and training programs for operation and compliance within the department.
Create a cohesive work team that works collaboratively to achieve unit's goals. Management and oversight of staff, including hiring, training, managing, performance assessment, and mentoring of project managers and support staff. Initiates, influences, and creates development opportunities for staff.
Negotiate consultant contracts, major changes to consultant and contractor contracts.
Proactively represents the University and department through participation in meetings and special projects, as well as USM/UMB on an external basis.
Performs other related duties as assigned, including department budget.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Construction Management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Ten (10) years of experience spent progressively building a background in project design, management, implementation, and construction of institutional or commercial building projects.
Supervisory: Three (3) years of experience at a management/leadership level.
Licensure/Certification: State of Maryland Professional Engineer or Architect licensure, Project Management Institute PMP, or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) preferred.

Facilitate timely completion of construction phases and ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects.
Effectively communicates both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Writes and presents information in a clear and concise way. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.
Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Effectively negotiate with a broad range of internal and external individuals or agency representatives.
Possesses well developed, detail oriented organizational skills. Ability to evaluate alternative designs and associated costs. Ability to evaluate proposals, design and construction modifications, and change orders. Possesses skill in coordinating design concepts with other Architectural and Engineering disciplines. Ability to address multiple tasks, technical issues, and contingencies simultaneously.
Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with others to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up with customers. Ability to work with leadership to set and achieve goals based on priorities of projects and support of internal and external customers. Skill in managing and supervising Project Managers and other design and construction staff and the ability to mentor subordinates.
Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Reaches compromise and consensus to influence and negotiate. Remains calm and is able to manage conflict, and works well with a diverse workforce.
