Required Qualifications: The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at San José State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Urban Geographic Information Science (GIScience) with specific focus on environmental or social applications of GIScience/Spatial Data Science. The position will begin in August 2020. Applicants must have a PhD in Geography, Geographic Information Science, Urban Planning, or a related discipline from an accredited institution. The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in GIScience with a research focus in one or more of the following areas: expertise in current and emerging methods in geo/spatial statistics; spatial data science/big data; or geo-visualization. Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or other comparable experiences.
Preferred Qualifications: Special consideration will be given to candidates who can a) demonstrate their ability to use proprietary and open source tools to leverage the power of big data and advanced spatial analytics to conduct interdisciplinary urban research; b) have significant programming experience (e.g., Python); and/or c) have experience working with big data and data visualization tools (e.g., Hadoop, R, Tableau, machine learning and predictive analytics). Ideally, our new colleague will be interested in leveraging the locational advantages of the Bay Area and work on complex and novel problems in GIScience with an urban/regional focus, in partnership with departmental colleagues who are conducting research in one or more thematic areas related to housing, land use, economic development, public finance, urban design, transportation/mobility, participatory planning, sustainability, and immigration/globalization. A track record of grant proposal writing and project management experience is highly desirable as is a demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong record of teaching, research, and service, following the guidelines and norms articulated by the university. The successful candidate will teach a mix of upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in GIScience topics, as well as other courses in geography and/or urban planning. The faculty member will share student advising responsibilities related to GIS course offerings. The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement. In addition, the candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda. Finally, the successful candidate will be actively involved in shaping the development and growth of a new GIS research center at SJSU.
About the Department: SJSU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning, founded in 1970, includes an interdisciplinary and highly research-active team of scholars and engaged practitioners. Using Silicon Valley as a living lab, the department prepares diverse leaders who affect transformative change and create just, sustainable, and vibrant communities. The department is in a growing and building phase, as it has recently expanded to include the Geography program.
