Under the direct supervision of the visitor services manager, the nights and weekend manager oversees the security and safety functions at the block museum of art. Provide managerial support during weekend and evening hours of museum operation. Also responsible for coordinating the scheduled visitor services staff, security and hospitality needs; opening and closing the museum and serves as the evening contact to university police and facilities management.
Safety and Security
Ensure the safety of museum collection, staff, and guests; Ensures that all evening hours and programs of the museum have sufficient security personnel coverage
Administer system for controlling access of staff, contractors, and guests to the museum
Perform proper opening and closing procedures for the museum and areas within it
Implement security, safety, emergency, and evacuation related programs, policies, and systems based on best practices and provide staff with information and updates on proper interpretation and application
Ensure that staff and guests understand and implement museum rules, regulations, procedures, and policies
Respond to emergencies within and directly outside the museum, making real-time decisions when taking action for security issues, threats, or concerns
Report on, perform investigations, and draft reports for all security-related matters
Monitor and coordinate with conservation and the registrar to respond to incidents regarding works of art
Consult and collaborate with colleagues at the museum to define security needs for exhibitions and special events
Coordinate event set-up/breakdown with museum staff
Participate in coordinating with the Senior Registrar every exhibition to conduct artwork counts and artwork intake appearances
Assist with conducting annual Emergency Evacuation Drills.
Coordinates all electronic and scheduled evening security needs of the museum
Oversees proper evening closing procedures and act as evening liaison to university police
Execute strategic security and safety plans and programs that not only protect the collection but also deliver excellent customer service to guests visiting the museum
Manage staffing at the guest services desk, ensuring that adequate resources and trained staff are available during all building open hours
Maintain a guest approach with all visitors to ensure a positive experience
Exercise judgment, discretion, tact, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills in interactions with staff and guests
Assist visitors and provide proper information as requested
Respond to visitor complaints and/or requests for assistance and evaluate the appropriate course of action
Establish and maintain close working relationship with University Police and Facility Operations,
Maintain best practices for cultural property protection issues, including active membership in the International Foundation for Cultural Property Protection (IFCPP)
Maintain consistent daily logs and reporting procedures
Maintain and Monitor Exhibition brochures, Block Cinema calendars, and Program literature inventory levels, which are displayed at the Visitor Services Info Desk.
Assist the Assistant Manager of Security & Visitor Services and the Visitor Services Info desk Attendant with Creating daily/weekly Visitor Services Catalogues Credits and Checks Sales reports.
Assist the Building Manager with building upkeep & needs in the Building Managers absence.
Performs other duties as assigned.
An understanding of security issues, needs and current practices in a service environment;
Minimum two years of experience in management of security guards and services;
Experience in security needs of museums or other types of cultural institutions;
Ability to manage relationships with university and local police;
Ability to work with various museum constituencies;
Ability to collaborate with staff in providing security at various museum events;
Experience with securing high value objects;
Exceptional customer service skills; Ability and experience of understanding the security and visitor services needs of both the works on public view and in the collection of the museum and the visitors who come to the museum;
