Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Veterinary Techologist for the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED). As part of ORED, the Veterinary Technologist provides technical support to the veterinarians in caring for a wide range of animal species. Performs a broad range of duties typical of both a veterinary clinical care and research setting.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Performs routine veterinary care and support including, but not limited to: animal exams, dental prophylaxis, collection of biological samples, basic surgical procedures, etc. on a wide variety of species
Performs treatment, diagnostic laboratory procedures, and necropsy.
Keeps records and does rodent breeding and colony management.
Orders and maintains inventory of drugs, surgical, and veterinary supplies.
Assists in or perform surgery and trains, observes and monitors research personnel.
In consultation with veterinarians, plans and schedules sentinel program.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science; Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A minimum of two years experience in a laboratory or animal care facility (preferably including work in both small animal veterinary practices, animal research environment, academia or pharma industry).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel, when necessary, to sites throughout New Jersey for business demands
Two years of driving experience
Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers, which requires a pre-placement medical evaluation.
Must undergo criminal background check in order to work with controlled substances (e.g. narcotics, barbiturates)
Certification or licensure as a Veterinary Technician in another state is desirable. (New Jersey does not license or certify veterinary technicians)
Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at any of level of animal technician (ALAT, LAT, LATg)
Experience with restraint, handling and veterinary care of large animal species.

Materials include, but are not limited to: Surgical instruments; scalpel blades; sutures; syringes and needles; catheters; dissection instruments; controlled substances (e.g. narcotics); formaldehyde; general veterinary supplies (medications, treatment supplies, surgical supplies); microorganism stains; laboratory supplies (beakers, pipette tips, etc.); oxygen tanks; inhalation anesthesia; medical waste; blood collection supplies
Software includes: Microsoft Office (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access; MS Outlook; MS Powerpoint; MS Publisher); Internet Explorer; Adobe Acrobat; custom web-based animal care program management software
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Position requires employee to walk, stand for several hours when conducting inspections of animal facilities and laboratories.
