About Northeastern: Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.
About the Opportunity: With signature graduate programs in Information Design and Data Visualization as well as Experience Design, the Department of Art + Design and the College of Arts, Media and Design are now working to establish joint research and programs with Northeastern's Institute of Network Science. Data Visualization is also a key aspect of the expansion into the Northeastern's growing global network, looking to launch programs at the University's new campuses in Vancouver, London, Seattle, and Toronto. The work of designing experiences based on data-driven technologies will allow both the Department and the College to expand on their profile and build solid reputations and programs in this key area of strategic focus. The successful candidate will contribute to and collaborate with faculty of our MFA and MS programs in Information Design + Visualization and Experience Design and our planned PhD in Interdisciplinary Design and Media. These degrees are built upon well-established undergraduate theory and practice programs with an emphasis on bringing innovative and engaging works of art, media and design into the public sphere. We also offer BFA degrees in Design, Media Art, and Game Design, as well as coordinated degrees with other Colleges at Northeastern such as the D'Amore McKim School of Business and the Khoury College of Computer Science.
The Department of Art + Design has three distinct advantages: (I) Our diversified faculty conducts strong courses of study in a rich spectrum of practices: studio art, art history and critical studies in contemporary art and emerging media; graphic, information, interaction and experience design; digital arts, animation, game theory and design, photography, film, video, and interactive media. (II) We are located within a major private global research university and a leader in worldwide experiential learning, urban engagement and interdisciplinary research and our College has a unique combination of disciplines, including Architecture, Art + Design, Game Design, Communication Studies, Journalism, Media and Screen Studies, Music, and Theatre. (III) We are in Boston, a thriving urban center of culture, education, research and innovation with extensive global connections. See: www.northeastern.edu/camd.

Responsibilities: The Department of Art + Design in the College of Arts, Media and Design invites applications and nominations for an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Center for Design and the Center for the Arts.
With data and information becoming powerful, pervasive, and controversial, our department values accomplished designers and researchers deeply committed to creating meaningful, data-oriented, and human-driven experiences and services that balance the opportunities and the threats inherent to data processes and governance. The capacity to master data transformations playing with different methods and languages across multiple disciplines - together with the elaboration of a broader framework to advance the field of design research and scholarship broadly - are also required.
The ideal candidate is able to face complex and ill-defined problems, understand the dynamics of controversial socio-technical issues, and follow an integrative and holistic approach to design. The applicants should embrace creative research questions of how technologically mediated action is lived, felt, and valued by people with manifold intentions in everyday situations, and have perspectives on human experience as a process of making sense of the world, participating in culture, and engaging with community. In this position professors are expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a PhD, MDes/MFA, or equivalent terminal degree by the start date in visual, graphic, interior, interactive, experience or information design, architecture, digital arts and media, or related fields; have expertise in one or more areas of design practice; be prepared to engage in research with existing university and college strategic areas such as (but not limited to): computer science, health and social sciences, cyber security, robotics; and be eager to collaborate with faculty across other disciplines of our College and University. Candidates will be considered from a variety of design fields, including but not limited to graphic design, interaction design, service design, experience design, product design, exhibition design, interactive media arts and all related fields that ensure the capacity to transform data into meaningful experiences. Candidates must have a well-developed research agenda that will inform and advance current trends in the field through creative production, experimentation, collaboration, exhibition and publication. Evidence of a high level of skill and accomplishment across media, provocative meaning making, and a sophisticated aesthetic sensibility is expected.
Successful candidates will have or show potential for having a national and international record of excellence in creative practice, innovative research, substantive scholarship and effective teaching. All candidates should have a strong interest in collaborative work as well as experience in, or a commitment to, working with diverse student populations in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.
