The California Smokers' Helpline (CSH) is part of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center. The Helpline conducts research as well as provides free cessation related counseling service. The Helpline was the first statewide telephone-counseling service for smoking cessation in the U.S. that was based on experimentally-proven protocol (established in 1992). Cessation service is now provided using telephone and internet-based protocols.
The phone counseling service is provided in six languages--English, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Korean, and Vietnamese. The Helpline conducts high-caliber intervention research as well as population studies. The Helpline is funded to conduct two large and ongoing surveys in California: the California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS) and the survey to evaluate California's TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) program. The Helpline currently has grants and contract in excess of $10 million annually.
This position involves working on three related tasks: 1) Performs and analyzes usability testing with end user groups, 2) gathers and analyzes tracking information (e.g. google analytics) and 3) Helps create wireframes, simple prototypes, graphics and images, and User Interfaces or wireframes using a tool like LucidChart. These tasks would be performed across all of the Helpline's products currently being built or maintained – website, mobile app, and grant application system. The UX Designer will work with our product managers and IT team to help improve the user experience of the Helpline's products.
In addition, the UX Designer: applies design thinking and human-centered design principles to the web ecosystem; creates original design systems for websites/apps; oversees the user experience, interface, visual design, accessibility, implementation, performance and integration for websites and web applications; applies first-hand user accounts/experiences in addition to industry standard methodologies to create contextualized user experiences and designs; is responsible for technical aspects of website/app organization and programming, including interface design, information architecture, and user interaction; captures user requirements and applies data from user testing to iterate, improve, and modify new and existing systems, as well as develop prototypes for new systems; assists developers with front-end development of applications and appropriately applies responsive and progressive web design strategies to projects.
Conceptualizes and develops marketing and content strategies; conducts analyses of target markets and content owner goals in order to ensure optimal delivery of brand messaging and effective content; develops and maintains content strategies across publishing platforms (websites, social media, email); collects, maintains and analyzes information from websites using specialized data collection programs; creates and disseminates statistical reports for internal and external audiences; uses search engine optimization principles to evaluate and modify website/apps; reviews user and/or business requirements for data visualization projects; researches, maintains and implements operational enhancements for internal and external teams, including data collection, email marketing systems, and digital asset management; creates and edits web graphics; conceptualizes, develops refines and monitors promotional and marketing media; creates compelling original visual content for print, website and social media; and leads multimedia support and production.
Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
A minimum of two (2+) or more years of relevant experience.
Thorough understanding of the user-centered design process (user research, user needs assessment, user modeling, design, usability evaluation and developer relations).
Thorough understanding of design principles, guidelines and relevant policies including web accessibility standards.
Demonstrated skills in diagramming, prototyping and using design tools.
Strong ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
Working knowledge of email marketing systems, best practices for html email creation and strategies for effective email campaigns.
Demonstrated experience with digital marketing strategies and principles, as applied to web marketing and social media to promote services
