
Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations
Holy Names University in Oakland, CA is seeking a Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
Working with the VP for University Advancement, this Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations will be responsible for increasing funding from foundations, corporations, and other institutional funders through effective prospect research, persuasive proposals, and compliance/stewardship of existing awards. The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations plays a critical role in HNU's efforts to deepen its philanthropic relationships with institutional funders, including government agencies. In furtherance of the university's integrated strategic plan, the Director both develops and implements the strategy for corporate and foundation engagement. This includes advising senior leadership, collaboration with faculty/staff on proposal development, and maintaining a strong line of communication with institutional funders.
The director shall serve as a key member of the Vice President for University Advancement's management team and as a key conduit to faculty and staff at the university, using discretion, enthusiasm, and sound judgement in the implementation of HNU's corporate and foundation relations program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION: Lead all phases of the grant funding cycle – from cultivation and solicitation to compliance and stewardship. Provide work direction to vendors, shared administrative assistant and/or student worker. Meet dollar and activity metrics as set with the VP for University Advancement. Produce well-written, accurate and timely follow-up and related correspondence such as contact reports, cover and thank you letters, e-mails, reports, and briefings in support of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding institutional funders. Track and record activities as they relate to institutional funders using the CRM database. Regularly attend events in and around the Bay Area, familiarizing oneself with community priorities. Actively participate in community outreach efforts and strategy. Identify and advise the President, Provost, and VP for University Advancement on new program, project, and funding sources. Develop and process all grant and agency contracts, including writing, reviewing, and finalizing proposals. Implement a grant and contract monitoring system to facilitate efficient coordination. In collaboration with the VP for University Advancement, recommend strategies to President and Provost to maximize funding efforts in support of HNU's key initiatives. Arrange meetings for senior leadership with foundation officers. Plan site visits for foundation officers and prepare necessary briefing materials. Using independent decision-making authority, create and manage the grant calendar. Participate as an active member of the Office of University Advancement, sharing information and collaborating with colleagues in a respectful and professional manner. Serve as a member of the Vice President for University Advancement's leadership team. Perform other duties as assigned in support of Holy Names University's mission.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred. Minimum of five years of experience in fundraising/external relations in a non-profit and/or higher education setting. Successful procurement of major institutional funding with a verifiable track record of creating winning proposals required. Familiarity with the Bay Area philanthropic landscape and higher education are essential. An understanding of Federal Grants is strongly preferred. Proficiency in the use of database systems and business software is essential. Familiarity with Blackbaud Raiser's Edge (or the equivalent) is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong research and analytical skills. Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing in order of importance. The ability to maintain and develop institutional relationships. Leadership skills and supervisory experience. Extensive knowledge of Raiser's Edge or a similar constituent database. Willingness to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed. Demonstrate sound judgement in situations requiring independent decision-making and in handling highly confidential and sensitive material. Strong project management, leadership, organizational, and planning skills. The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. A proven team player with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in Advancement and stakeholders (particularly faculty) throughout the university. A strong belief in the mission of HNU. Flexible and available for evening, weekend or early morning events and meetings. The ability to navigate the HNU campus, drive or fly to events is necessary and expected.
