Western Kentucky University, Department of Infrastructure and Operations, seeks applicants for a Network Specialist. The position is technical, on the network services team, and reports to the Lead Network Engineer.
Purpose of the Position
The Network Specialist position is essential to the proper operation of the University's network through the provisioning of customer-facing services as well as technical support to auxiliary and core groups within ITS and the University. They configure, implement, document, and maintain network equipment, systems, and applications. Their services extend primarily across Access and Wireless infrastructure.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary for this position but not construed as all-inclusive. The addition and deletion of duties assigned are at managements discretion and according to institutional needs.
Supports and maintains a large campus network serving diverse needs
Installs and configures enterprise-grade network switches, wireless access points, and routers
Diagnoses and resolves network-related problems
Maintains network documentation and operates supporting systems including but not limited to Network Management Systems (NMS), security-related systems, and authentication systems
On-call responses for network outages and network-related issues. "Off-hours" schedule flexibility for planned or emergency work as needed. The position is expected to maintain adequate Internet connectivity from their residence
Installs and configures hardware, OS software, and applications related to Linux and Windows servers and workstations
Coordinates with internal and external groups to resolve technical issues
Project management for both network-related projects and other ITS-related initiatives
Assists with research, planning, testing, and implementation of new technologies and services

Minimum of three years of relevant work experience
Excellent and demonstrable troubleshooting and diagnostics skills
Experience with Cat-5/6 UTP installation
Experience with enterprise network equipment such as Cisco
Work experience with enterprise wireless deployments and related technologies
Work experience with the technologies represented by the following terms: Ethernet, IP, VLAN, SNMP, DNS, DHCP
Ability to participate in on-call rotation for unplanned outages and work outside of regular University hours, typically planned, as needed.
Must maintain Internet connectivity from personal residence and be able to travel to the Bowling Green campus in a timeframe congruent to the department's on-call policy.
Possess a valid driver's license and maintain it in good standing with University policies
Must have suitable hand/eye coordination in such that working with a variety of hand and power tools do not represent a safety concern.
Prospective candidates must be able to work from a ladder, lift up to 50 lbs., have a functional knowledge of basic hand tools, and be able to differentiate the colors of a standard 4 pair UTP cable without assistance
Must be comfortable working in small spaces.
Salary Grade: 108 Salary Range: $54,000 - $57,000
