Avenues Internship - Any experience level considered
We are currently seeking an equine intern for the 2020-2021 year for a hospital and ambulatory internship. Our hospital is located in Orange County, New York, approximately 90 minutes north of New York City but in the heart of horse country. Our staff includes seven veterinarians including two board-certified equine surgeons. The practice features a 13-stall hospital barn with three climate controlled intensive care stalls equipped with camera monitoring. There are two spacious treatment/outpatient exam areas, an operating room with overhead monorail system, and two padded induction/recovery stalls. We recently started our nuclear scintigraphy program with brand new gamma camera. Equipment includes 3 portable digital radiography units, 5 portable ultrasound machines, 2 flexible endoscopes, a premier overland dynamic laryngoscope, video gastroscope, Powerfloat dental floats, shockwave machine, PRP machine, IRAP, Pegasus laser, and in-house lab.
Although the practice is primarily ambulatory, on surgery days, up to eight elective procedures (including arthroscopies, upper airway surgeries, fracture repair, castration, umbilical herniorraphy, etc) are scheduled. Specialty lameness evaluations are also performed at the clinic. There are 4-5 veterinarians on the road every day. This gives our intern a lot of opportunity to learn from a variety of veterinarians. Various ambulatory cases are seen daily, including lameness examination, routine health care, reproductive work for both mares and stallions, internal medicine examinations, herd health, and emergency medicine. Opportunities for our intern include working with experienced reproductive veterinarians, Dr. Herb Burns and Jake Kiefer. We currently perform semen freezing, embryo transfer flushes, hysteroscopy, oviductal hydrotubation, oocyte aspiration, as well as more routine work with stallion collection, artificial insemination and mare and stallion reproductive examinations.
At least 40% of our caseload is Standardbreds, both racehorses in training and breeding stock. Additionally, we see a wide variety of sport horses including hunter/jumper, dressage, and Western performance horses. Cases regularly involve all age groups, from foals to geriatrics. Clients are varied and include pet horse farms as well as large show horse barns, commercial breeding farms, local resorts and racetrack work. Pine Bush Equine Services serves as the primary veterinarians for the USDA New York Animal Import Center (one of only three import centers in the United States).
Pine Bush Equine Services schedules appointments Monday-Friday and provides 24-hour emergency coverage. All night time emergency surgery is referred to a local surgical center. The intern will rotate through appointments with each veterinarian. During an introductory period, the intern will accompany the on-call veterinarian to emergencies on evenings and weekends. After both parties agree that competence has been reached, the intern will begin to perform solo emergency work that includes phone consultation for each case with a senior veterinarian. There will always be a senior veterinarian on call available for backup. After the introductory period, the internship on-call schedule will be 3-4 nights weekly and 2 weekends per month.
Pine Bush Equine will provide our intern with the opportunity to become proficient in treating a wide variety of both elective and emergency cases. We are committed to having our intern exposed to all aspects of quality equine practice. The intern will not be treated as a technician. We provide a fast-paced, friendly teaching environment with a strong emphasis in hands-on experience. There is flexibility to tailor the internship to an individual's specific interests. It is our goal that upon completion of the internship, our intern will be well suited to pursue a career in private practice or continue to a residency program.
Our intern will work directly with our veterinarians during the day. During surgery days, the intern will perform general anesthesia. The intern is responsible for administering treatments to hospitalized patients during evenings and weekends with available help from a senior veterinarian and our well-staffed hospital. The intern will be given the opportunity to repeatedly perform a wide variety of skilled procedures such as joint injections, airway endoscopy, anesthesia, gastroscopy, ultrasound exams, reproductive exams and minor surgeries. Our intern will be able to work side by side with board certified surgeon Dr. Michael Ross, world-renowned professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center and author of Dyson and Ross, Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse.
Application deadline is December 16, 2019. Students are encouraged to apply early. Applicants must obtain a DVM degree and NY licensure by start of the internship. A resume, letter of intent, recent photograph, and letters of recommendation from two veterinarians are required for application.
Salary is $30,000 per year with benefits, optional housing is provided and a practice vehicle when on call. Term of employment will be June 2020-2021 (start and end dates can be flexible). Associate positions are available for the right candidate following completion of the internship.
