The Research and Alliances Officer seeks to positively impact translational research within the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus and between UMB and commercial industry partners. This person will work with the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) and the UMB Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) to help UMB investigators meet their translational, clinical, commercialization, and entrepreneurial targets and milestones. This position works with internal and external stakeholders throughout the life science project and/or product development process, facilitating the translation of academic research into the clinic and into commercial opportunities.
The Research and Alliances Officer will execute project management processes and methodologies to ensure projects are delivered on-time, within the budget, adhere to high quality standards, and benefit UMB's research team objectives. This will be achieved by ensuring their smooth implementation from conception through study activation and notifying of OTT new, resulting intellectual property (IP). The position involves cultivating and maintaining relationships with academic researchers, UMB core service providers in the Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (CIBR), funding agencies, foundations, investors and corporate entities, and maintaining clear lines of communication with all Office of Research and Development and ICTR stakeholders as part of that process.
As an alliance manager, the main objective of the Research and Alliance Officer is to increase and sustain long-term collaborations and therefore develop new business benefiting UMB and its research ecosystem. The Research and Alliances Officer will develop and maintain broad and deep external partner relations on a global scale by being knowledgeable of each corporate partners' missions, markets, and business challenges, to identify collaborative opportunities. They will ensure these are aligned with UMB's strategies and capabilities. The Research and Alliance Officer will coordinate constant engagement with partners and internal resources, and in doing so, they will define, forecast, develop, and monitor partner performance goals and objectives. These alliances are expected to drive new license revenue and research funding to UMB as well as publications and arising IP from UMB's faculty members.

The Research and Alliances Officer will manage both projects and internal and external alliances related to the development and commercialization of UMB IP. Serve as ICTR's Research Navigator, identifying institutional resources and potential industry partners to advance UMB investigators' biomedical research objectives that will result in the translation of findings into the clinic and/or into commercial development. This position will:
* Identify collaborators or specialized equipment. * Refer researchers to appropriate UMB services/cores. * Identify available support and potential funding sources. * Inform and refer investigators and collaborators to other ICTR sponsored programs and events. * Assist in the preparation of external clinical and translational research and commercialization grants (such as MIIs). * Provide project-specific research consultation. * Manage ICTR translational grant program(s). * Perform other duties as assigned.
Education : Advanced degree in science, business, or law is required. PhD preferred.
Experience : Three (3) years project management experience. Previous industry experience in research and development, project management, regulatory science or as scientific liaison preferred. Direct experience in pharmaceutical and biotech industries in drug, medical device, and/or software research and development.
Other : Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Technical background to understand and interpret complex life science-based technologies and markets. Possess knowledge of life science research and product development process and working knowledge of contracts and licenses to understand legal consequences.
Knowledge of FDA, ICH, and other regulatory guidelines. Experience writing research materials.
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage time effectively to meet concurrent deadlines.
Able to make independent decisions of significance for the team. Assume personal responsibility for all outcomes. Ability to reach compromise and consensus to influence and negotiate and to manage conflict.
Effectively and concisely communicate with multiple stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal skills.
