The City of Newport News Waterworks Department is recruiting for an Engineer.
Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for complex engineering work involving the planning, design, project management and inspection of a variety of utilities projects. Reports to the Senior Engineer.
There are three (3) levels of Engineer distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.
Oversees and serves as project manager on major water utility projects such as the dam safety program or the water utility consultant engineering contract; identifies, researches, and recommends project needs, plans, and scope of work; drafts requests for proposals; assists in selecting contractors. Performs contract administration of major projects; oversees and monitors work performed by contractors to ensure that contract plans, scope and specifications are being followed; oversees project inspections; interprets, contracts, resolves conflicts, and negotiates contract changes as appropriate; reviews and recommends invoices for payment. Ensures the safety, security, and regulatory compliance of all work assigned.
Engineer I - Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Engineer II - Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and 1 - 3 years of progressively responsible experience including project management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Engineer III - Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and 3 - 5 years of progressively responsible experience including project management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
