International Studies and Programs (ISP) is the hub for international research, teaching and outreach at MSU. As a university-level office under the leadership of an associate provost and dean, ISP supports international activities throughout the institution, working to mobilize MSU's research and scholarship, enhance study abroad and other educational programs, form and strengthen international partnerships, and welcome and support international visitors, scholars and students.
ISP is seeking an Accountant I to support financial operations and acts as a fiscal officer as well as provide administrative support for International Studies and Programs’ Dean’s Office performing general fund, pre- and
post-award grant functions.
The Accountant I coordinates with key stakeholders on annual planning, monitoring, reporting, and analysis of financial data and is responsible for ongoing quality improvement of processes, policies and procedures as it relates to finances and for ensuring that communication and reporting of financial matters is accurate.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintain fund ledgers and allocate transactions to appropriate accounts, ensuring funds are spent in accordance with fiscal policy and the account purpose
Review and approve financial transactions and monthly reconciliations, preparing correcting entries as needed
Participate in the planning, preparation, and maintenance of budgets for assigned accounts
Design and generate financial reports for annual, monthly, and ad-hoc reporting
Ensure that processes and controls are in place, including the safeguarding of assets
Ensure compliance with university business policies and procedures
Act as primary contact on financial aspects for the general fund and post-award accounts, including preparing annual budgets; working closely with the project managers; reviewing receipts, replenishing funds, tracking balances, and reconciling with accounts at the end of each fiscal year
Prepare annual subcontracts, including annual allocations with partner institutions; prepares budget for proposed funding requests; manages financial aspects and provides administrative and programmatic tasks related to programs; prepares financial and program reports
Prepares subcontracts and budgets for proposed funding requests
Support the HR-related aspects of the accounts
Support the development of the annual work plans and annual reports for projects
Assist with planning events and travel reconciliations for project activities and personnel
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in accounting, finance, or related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in financial statement and report preparation, general ledger accounting and budgeting; experience in word processing, spreadsheet and database software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position may require international travel.
Experience in EBS, specifically KFS module; knowledge of University policies and procedures relative to accounting practices; proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook; experience in post-award accounting functions; excellent communication and organization skills and attention to detail; ability to maintain confidentiality; previous personal or professional experience internationally
