The Exposure Science and Sustainability Institute (ESSI) provides excellence in applied research and training. Effective communication is a critical component of ESSI’s success. We are looking for an experienced communications professional to lead and support our dissemination of applied research, teaching and tools to the health and safety community.
Specifically, this role includes developing and editing web and multimedia documents, and communication pieces and potentially, assisting with manuscript development. You will work with ESSI’s director to develop and update the website, and educational platforms (e.g. Canvas) incorporating content from various sources. You will meet with ESSI faculty and project teams to explore project scope, including purpose, audience, budget, timeframe and preferred format, and subsequently determine the best media and format to meet these needs. You will be responsible for making final edits and publishing to web or media platforms.
Support the Creation of High Quality and Differentiated Content and Communications (40%):
Partner with the ESSI Director on the design of web-based course materials
Suggest best practices and opportunity areas where the quality of the content being created can improve.
Faculty Advancement (40%): Communications and public relations work to promote ESSI’s core faculty
Ownership of the ESSI website
Responsible for the theme and content layout
Write and edit articles
Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as faculty
Work with ESSI team members and student workers on deployment of content to the UMN School of Public Health IH and Environmental Health Sciences Division website and via email
Responsible for proactive and reactive public relations opportunities with faculty members
Creation/oversight of Research Briefs in collaboration University/SPH Relations
Create/develop/write or collaborate with team members on developing content – such as news stories, short form videos, photo essays - that can be utilized on owned media channels to garner earned media coverage
Write, Manage and Edit Communications for ESSI (20%)

BA/BS degree in Communication, Journalism, Marketing or Art or related field
Minimum two years of professional communications experience. Non-communications degreed individuals must have four years of combined equivalent education and experience.
Demonstrated skill, knowledge, and ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally, writing and in presentation
Highly collaborative style, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal colleagues, and external partners and the public
Strong organizational, project management and problem solving skills
Portfolio or online writing samples
Preferred Qualifications/Selection Criteria:
Five years of professional communications experience
Communications experience within a higher education setting
Ability to design, implement and optimize processes
Experience developing measurement strategies/plans relating to earned media
Media relations experience
