Microbiome Genomics CoLab Director
Under the direction of the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine Director, and working closely with the leadership committee, the incumbent will serve as Director of Microbial Genomics, with a focus toward providing microbiome genomics analysis services to users within the BCMM, the University of California San Francisco and beyond.
The recently launched UCSF BCMM is focused on human microbiome research, with a particular interest in accelerating discovery and translation in the fields of early life microbiome and therapeutic development. The Center is developing multiple collaborative labs (CoLabs), technology hubs that facilitate microbiome research projects. Research projects facilitated through the Microbiome Genomics CoLab will be diverse, spanning disciplines within all schools across campus, and may include one or more of the following: Providing guidance on appropriate sample collection and preservation methods, sample extraction for library preparation, sequencing (16S rRNA, ITS2 and metagenomics) and data analyses. In addition the director of the Microbiome Genomics CoLab will be responsible for development of novel genomics tools to address ongoing challenges in the field of translational Microbiome research.
The candidate will provide consultation and collaboration with academic and industry partners to develop microbiome genomics projects and insure timely and efficient delivery of data and analyses. The director will oversee a team consisting of a technician and a data analyst. We anticipate that this team will grow with increasing Microbiome Genomics CoLab use.
The Microbiome Genomics CoLab director will be expected to assist in the submission of original research proposals to government agencies to secure additional funding for research. Co-author publications including scientific articles and reviews. They will also be expected to lead training programs, interact with other CoLabs and build collaborations with researchers both in academia and industry.
• Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least 4 years of research experience.
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least 5 years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least 5-10 years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least 10 years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Proven project management skills; experience assessing technical and resource needs and demands and establish priorities, and manage multiple sub-projects simultaneously.
• Experience in existing program development and creating new programs to broaden institutional reach and reach out to industrial collaborators or customers.
• Capacity to develop a robust business plan with an aim towards a sustainable Microbiome Genomics CoLab within 5 years of inception.
• Experience in industry/university relations with a track record of successfully bringing university researchers and industry together to create new research partnerships and programs.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, interpret, evaluate, and present research findings in a variety of formats including research manuscripts, grant proposals, external manuscripts, and oral presentations and in collaborative and instructional scientific interactions within laboratory and discussion settings.
• Experience writing proposals for significant projects.
• Proven advanced analytical and statistical skills to evaluate information, procedures or situations to define a problem or objective, identify relevant concerns, recognize alternatives, formulate logical and objective conclusions, and prepare reports.
• Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy of quality service with proven aptitude for working as part of a team.
• Ability to utilize on-line databases and other software to create, retrieve, and compile reports using standard software programs.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues, faculty, donors, and industry partners, with an emphasis on collaboration, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism, and discretion.
• Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of technology development processes.
• Solid communications skills with the ability to speak and write clearly about technical and scientific research and develop narrative for correspondence, brochures, and other public relations material.
• Capacity to innovate and implement.
