Lab Manager - Advanced Prototyping / Statler College 13209
The Statler College is seeking applications for a Lab Manager to manage the operations of the Innovation Hub, including rapid prototyping, welding, and a 3D metal printer facility and oversee the daily operations in the Advanced Prototyping Center.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Manage the operations of the Innovation Hub, including rapid prototyping, welding, and a 3D metal printer facility. Maintain operating knowledge of all major equipment located in the Innovation Hub.
Administer billing and inventory systems for Innovation Hub facilities. Ensure proper rates are being applied to each activity, equipment usage is being recorded appropriately and accurately, and sufficient supply inventory is available to meet customer needs. Ensure that metrics for equipment usage, inventory, and staff usage are captured and used to guarantee that the needs of students, instructional courses, research, and external users.
Work with Statler College Safety Officer to create and document user training requirements and lab safety protocols for Innovation Hub facilities. Develop plan to coordinate facility access with satisfactory completion of equipment utilization and safety trainings.
Serve as a resource for other maker spaces and innovation initiatives on campus. Work with students, faculty, staff, and community to support development and operations of Innovation Hub programs. Work with college K-12 outreach staff to develop STEM learning activities.
Develop, maintain, and perform trainings with courses and research projects, personal projects, and external users to ensure the safe operations of the equipment. Decide depth of training based on the hazardous nature of each piece of equipment and the corresponding task being performed. Assess trainings on a quarterly basis and revise as necessary.
Oversee trained and qualified facilities users to ensure the safety of the user, occupants, and equipment. Provide guidance and oversight when necessary and guarantee that procedures and protocols are upheld. Take the necessary action to safeguard users, employees, and facilities within Innovation Hub guidelines.
Advanced Prototyping Facility:
Create an access schedule and staffing plan for use of the facilities including internal users for recognized courses and research projects, personal projects, and users external to the institution. Monitor plan and adjust as needed to maximize facility availability and satisfy user work requests.
Oversee daily operations in the Advanced Prototyping Center and assign work and responsibilities to the correct shop staff based on his/her knowledge. Supervise shop staff to ensure that a high standard of work is being met.
Develop and maintain inventory of Advanced Prototyping Center equipment. Evaluate equipment and capabilities offered by Innovation Hub facilities. Determine if offerings are appropriate based on usage, user feedback, and current technologies. Make suggestions for changes to Innovation Hub Director within the Statler College Dean's Office.
Work with students, faculty, staff, and community members to understand the fabrication that is needed. Read and understand part drawings and blue prints and properly select the machining or fabrication process to produce accurate and functional parts.
Manage, maintain, and operate a variety of CNC and manual machines used to perform daily tasks and activities to the specified tolerance from student projects, researchers, and external clients. Program CNC machines using CAM software while monitoring feeds and speed to accurately adjust when needed to preform jobs safely and accurately.
Preform engineering design tasks using computer aided drafting software i.e. Solidworks, AutoCAD Fusion 360. Adjusting CAD models from students, faculty, staff, and community members based on machine capabilities and tolerances. Review and make suggestions for modified final designs.
Program tool paths for CNC equipment using computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software based on provided engineering CAD models. Convert the CAM files to G-code and M-code to translate toolpath into language CNC equipment understands using the corresponding post processor.
Review all tool paths generated by users before running on a CNC equipment. Assist in necessary tool path adjustments in cutting feeds, speeds, and cut depths for the safety of the equipment. Provide feedback for any changes made to help teach users proper specifications.
Assist with other functions and tasks in the Innovation Hub as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
Four (4) years experience in setup, maintenance, and operations of machining and fabrication equipment
Four (4) years of Engineering Design using different types of Computer Aided Drafting Software
Four (4) years reading and understanding blue prints and part drawings
Three (3) years in a managerial or supervisory role
Three (3) years working in a customer service oriented environment
One (1) year of welding experience preferred
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Demonstrated ability to select proper processes, techniques, and tooling during fabrication
Demonstrated ability to organize information, read blue prints and part drawings and relay any inconsistencies to customers
Demonstrated ability to be customer oriented and work effectively with a diverse group of individuals
Demonstrated ability to perform supervisory duties and support team efforts
Demonstrated ability to utilize electronic systems for management activities and billing procedures
Demonstrated ability to use CAD and CAM software effectively to produce precision parts
Demonstrated ability to operate CNC lathes and multi-axis CNC mills including selecting feeds and speeds
Demonstrated ability to operate manual machines including sheet metal fabrication equipment and welding
Demonstrated understanding of basic metallurgical properties in fabrication
Demonstrated ability to manage and teach other shop personnel necessary skills
Ability to learn institutional requirements for the protection of intellectual property, technology transfer, and export control
Ability to learn specific institutional or college policies and procedures
Ability to teach procedures and principles of machining and fabrication
Basic knowledge for accounting functions, procurement procedures, and project management
