About the Opportunity: The Department of Theatre is located in Northeastern's College of Arts, Media and Design which has a unique combination of disciplines, including Architecture, Art + Design, Communication Studies, Journalism, Media and Screen Studies, and Music. Responsibilities: Northeastern University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Theatre. The successful candidate must have the necessary qualifications and the ability to be appointed at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (12-month appointment, tenured) commencing July 1, 2020. The salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.
The Chair of the Department of Theatre will provide bold and visionary leadership - an innovative and inspiring leader and educator with the capacity to formulate new possibilities for our dynamic program. They will oversee the academic and artistic efforts of over 250 undergraduate majors and minors. The ideal candidate will engage in interdisciplinary research and/or creative practice as research in a way that supports the department's endeavors. The new faculty member will share a strong desire to develop projects and curricular offerings across the College Arts, Media and Design (CAMD) and/or the larger university. We seek a colleague who is passionate about the potential of live performance to engage with issues of identity, social justice, and the intractable challenges facing contemporary society.
The committee seeks candidates who are eager to explore the following ideas:
The role of theatre and performance in the digital age and the possibilities for theatre and performance education in relation to the university's focus on Human Literacies for the Age of Artificial Intelligence (Humanics);
The role of theatre in facilitating conversations about today's toughest challenges;
The role of theatre in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion locally and globally;
Cultivating synergy between theory and practice in a program intertwining liberal arts education with pre-professional training through production, studio praxis, and co-ops.
Qualifications: PhD or MFA in Theatre or related field.
Record of scholarly or artistic achievement commensurate with the rank of Associate or Full Professor at Northeastern University
Record of teaching excellence in higher education
Record of effective leadership and administrative experience
Evidence of ongoing creative or scholarly output with a national/international reputation.
Evidence of successful collaborative partnerships; such as those with other academic units, the community, and internationally
Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Connection to and awareness of trends in the fields of theatre and performance studies.
