Position Summary: The CAA Technical Shop is an academic support unit for the Departments of Art & Design, Architecture, Interior Architecture & Design, Landscape Architecture and Virtual Technology & Design. The Instructional Assistant in the CAA Technical Shop assists the Technical Shop Director by supervising the shop during evening and weekend hours and supervising work study staff during those periods. The Instructional Assistant will participate in training and educating students in safe shop techniques and processes, and maintaining shop facilities and equipment. The Instructional Assistant will also help to ensure a safe learning environment and will facilitate and guide student projects.
Two years experience in an academic shop or wood shop setting with demonstrated competence working with hand and power tools. Experience training others in the safe use of hand and power tools within an academic shop or wood shop setting. Experience supervising skilled and unskilled persons within a studio/shop environment. Experience working with Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing design, 3D design software. Must possess current First Aid and CPR certification (or obtain within 6 months of hire).
Experience working in a university or other educational setting. Experience in presenting educational materials to students and working in a group education setting. Specific and demonstrable experience in mechanical and electrical system diagnostics and repair. Demonstrated problem solving abilities. Specific and demonstrable experience in physical and digital fabrication pertaining to wood working, textiles, CNC, 3D Printing, laser cutters. Familiarity with or willingness to learn the diverse wood, metal and plastic applications used in an academic design setting including but not limited to shaping, laminating, carving, bending, fastening, and finishing. Experience in or appreciation for the design disciplines. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to exercise patience when dealing with students of varying ages and abilities. Knowledge of behavioral management related to an educational environment.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: The Technical Shop Assistant is a part time position that requires the employee to be available for 4 hour shifts during the operating hours of 5 pm until 10 pm, Monday through Friday, and 9 am and 1pm on Saturdays throughout each semester. The maximum hours available are 20 hours per week. The employee should anticipate opportunities to work outside of these times, and reduced/revised hours during academic breaks. The employee must possess strength and mobility to lift and/or otherwise move equipment or materials weighing 50 lbs. The employee must be able to stand and walk continuously throughout their shifts.
