Using established research and statistical methods, the UX Researcher and Designer studies, analyzes, and recommends improvements of the user experiences involved in a range of Penn Libraries services, including library spaces, analog and digital business processes-- such as circulation and online access -- digital and print collections, and web interfaces. Collaborating with library service and subject experts, the UX Researcher and Designer identifies usersâ™ expectations, work flows, research and learning behaviors, and other factors at the intersection of user experience and library functions. As a key member of the Impact and Assessment group, the UX Researcher and Designer fosters a culture of assessment and data-driven decision-making, advances best practices throughout the Libraries, and is a resource to staff and the Librariesâ™ partners-in-service across Penn.
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Impact and Assessment, the UX Researcher and Designer uses established research and statistical methods to study, analyze, and recommend improvements of the user experiences involved in a range of Penn Libraries services, including library spaces, analog and digital business processes-- such as circulation and online access -- digital and print collections, and web interfaces. Collaborating with library service and subject experts, the UX Researcher and Designer identifies usersâ™ expectations, workflows, research and learning behaviors, and other factors at the intersection of user experience and library functions. Using analytical and strategic skills, the UX Researcher and Designer will translate user study and feedback into actionable designs and recommendations for library applications and functions. They will be an advocate for users, understanding their pain points and identifying emerging needs. They will also apply the latest ergonomic solutions to service design as Penn adapts to the digital transformation of service. As a key member of the Impact and Assessment group, the UX Researcher and Designer fosters a culture of assessment and data-driven decision-making, advances best practices throughout the Libraries, and is a resource to staff and the Librariesâ™ partners-in-service across Penn.Â Â
They will conceive and conduct quantitative and qualitative surveys, focus groups, A/B/N testing, and develop collateral materials like personas and wireframes that will be resources for the Front-end developers, the Strategic Communications department, and the Libraries wider assessment program. Â Â
Lead research projects ranging in variety from single-question surveys to in-depth interviews and usability testing
Translate research findings into actionable recommendations and designs that support the creativity, efficiency, productivity of library users, and foster welcoming and responsive services
Collaborate with Front-end Developer, web and communications teams to ensure Librariesâ™ digital environments are optimized for users and conducive to scholarly activities
Serve as product owner of tools that support data collection and organizational intelligence, for example SUMA, Matomo, Qualtrics, and MetriDoc application
Propagate UX knowledge among the Librariesâ™ staff through informal training sessions and participation in the Librariesâ™ committees and task groups
Maintain current awareness of trends and tools for UX in the technical and library professional communities
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent academic training and experience
Experience conducting research at a deep level on user information needs, and information-finding behavior, affect, and understanding
Experience in the analysis of human/computer interaction, including UX for complex, transactional websites.
Grounding in qualitative and quantitative statistical methods
Experience using software tools relevant to UX analysis including flow diagrams, wireframes, statistical packages, and logging/analytics tools
Ability to communicate and write effectively.
