PGY2 Infectious Diseases – University of California Davis

The UCDMC Infectious Diseases (ID) specialty residency is a one-year postgraduate educational program designed to build on the experiences of a PGY-1 residency or equivalent clinical practice. This residency is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and participates in the ASHP matching program.
The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency program to contribute to the development of a clinical pharmacists in a specialized area of practice. The residency provides the resident(s) with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete the accredited PGY2 in ID pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification likely available in 2018.
The residency begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th. Clearance to start work by UCDHS Employee Health and a Human Resources orientation meeting must be completed prior to July 1st.
Applicants are expected to expeditiously and vigorously pursue pharmacist licensure in the State of California upon confirmation of acceptance to the UCDMC residency program. Licensure must be obtained per residency policy. Failure to achieve licensure per policy will be addressed by the Residency Advisory Committee on a case-by-case basis, with consequences that may include leave without pay or termination.
Educational Outcomes required by the Accreditation Standard
Outcome R1: Patient Care
In collaboration with the health care team, provide comprehensive medication management to patients with infectious diseases following a consistent patient care process. Ensure continuity of care during infectious diseases patient transitions between care settings. Manage antimicrobial stewardship activities.
Outcome R2: Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care
Demonstrate ability to manage formulary and medication-use processes for infectious diseases patients, as applicable to the organization and antimicrobial stewardship program. Demonstrate ability to conduct a quality improvement or research project. Manage and improve anti-infective-use processes.
Outcome R3: Leadership and Management
Establish oneself as an organizational expert for infectious diseases pharmacy-related information and resources. Demonstrate leadership skills for successful self-development in the provision of care for infectious diseases patients. Demonstrate management skills in the provision of care for infectious diseases patients.
Outcome R4: Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge
Provide effective medication and practice-related education to infectious diseases patients, caregivers, health care professionals, students, and the public (individuals and groups). Effectively employ appropriate preceptor roles when engaged in teaching students, pharmacy technicians, or fellow health care professionals) about care of patients with infectious diseases.

Orientation: Hospital orientation and Residency Orientation – complete initial assessment
Inpatient Adult ID Consult Service rotation – part 1
ICAAC and/or IDSA meeting
Microbiology lab (or as soon as lab can accommodate)
Administrative, committee, clinical functions, teaching, and research
Inpatient Adult ID Consult Service – total of 12 weeks, in 2 blocks
Pediatric ID Consult Service (w/ clinic) – 4 weeks
CARES clinic – 4 weeks
Transplant ID – 4- 6 weeks
Microbiology Lab – 2 weeks
Antimicrobial Stewardship 6 to 8 weeks Electives:
Burn Surgery Service – 4 weeks
MICU – 4 weeks
SICU – 4 weeks
Hematology/Oncology – 4 weeks
Emergency Department – 4 weeks
Hepatitis C Clinic 2 – 4 weeks
Investigational Drugs 2 – 3 weeks
International Health Care 2 – 4 weeks
Longitudinal experiences (required):
ID pharmacist- Antibiotic Subcommittee contributions, administrative functions, participation in Antimicrobial Stewardship Program – 6 weeks minimum ( 30 days), in divided blocks, peds and adult
-Rotations can be extended or repeated per the resident’s interests
-Each longitudinal experience will have some concentrated block time
-A total of 8-12 weeks will be granted for project time, which can be used to work on a variety of activities, such as preparing guidelines or policies for the Antibiotic Subcommittee, upcoming lectures, etc.

Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee – prn, third Wednesday
Infection Prevention Committee meetings – every first Wednesday

Requirements for successful completion of the residency:
California License obtained per residency policy
Successful completion of all required rotations/learning experiences (with no "needs improvement") Some G&O may be checked off by the RPD at resident closeout
Completion of a primary research project
Presentation of primary research project at a Residency Research Conference
Abstract submission and poster of project results to a major ID or pharmacy meeting, and completion of a written manuscript
Completion of a secondary project (usually and MUE or CQI project)
Completion of all assigned projects, monographs, etc. intended for review at the Antibiotic Subcommittee
Clinical staffing for a minimum of 24 weekend days (8 hour shifts)
Completed end-of-year self assessment

About PGY2 Infectious Diseases - University of California Davis
