The Department of History at The University of Texas at San Antonio, a recognized, Hispanic Serving Institution, invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in the history of the Islamic world, to begin in Fall 2020. Specialization may be in any period or region of the Islamic world and/or Muslim communities elsewhere in the world including the Americas, Africa, and the Black Diaspora. We seek candidates whose research and teaching contribute to the department theme of “Empires, States, and Borders.” Experience in digital humanities and public history is especially welcomed. The successful candidate must demonstrate their ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of diverse urban populations and support the University’s commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success.
Responsibilities include a 2:2 teaching load of undergraduate and masters-level courses related to the area of expertise, while conducting an active program of research that contributes to scholarship in the field. Additionally, faculty will serve on departmental committees and offer university service. Applicants must have completed the Ph.D. by the start of the appointment.
Review of applications will begin on October 14, 2019; and complete application must include 1.) a letter of application that addresses your interest in and qualifications for the position; 2.) a current curriculum vitae; 3.) a short personal statement on research, teaching, and discussion of the role diversity and inclusion plays in an academic environment (1-2 pages); and 4.) a sample syllabus for an introductory survey course on Islamic History. At a later stage in the search process you will be asked to submit three letters of reference and a writing sample.
