Doane University is seeking an innovative leader for the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO). Doane is a comprehensive liberal arts university, serving 2,700 students through four Nebraska campus locations and online. The CIO is responsible for the management and oversight of all administrative and academic technology services provided to students, faculty, and staff. This opportunity is exciting for a senior information technology (IT) executive who has the experience, leadership ability, and enthusiasm to chart an innovative and strategic direction for IT services. The CIO serves as the primary administrator for the Information Technology Services department and manages several critical areas: the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system; file servers and networking infrastructure; application software development; information security; instructional technologies; installation and maintenance of technology equipment; user support services; and policy development. The CIO works collaboratively with key stakeholders to prioritize technology initiatives, identify risks, evaluate trends, and make IT recommendations. The CIO reports directly to the president and serves as the university’s senior advisor on matters related to information technology.
Plan and implement enterprise information infrastructure to support both distributed and centralized academic, student services, and business operations to achieve an efficient and cost-effective operation.
Explore, migrate, and utilize SaaS (software as a service) and other cloud services to support university IT needs.
Provide leadership in the Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) to foster a culture of continuous improvement, the adoption of industry recognized best practices, exemplary service delivery, and strong project management.
Ensure architecture of the IT portfolio provides appropriate protection, flexibility, and scalability to meet current and future needs.
Manage vendor and outsourced IT contracts and relationships.
Oversee the regular assessment of IT data security, risk management, disaster recovery, business continuity, and regulatory compliance to ensure processes are in place.
Maintain a quality Information Services operation, maximizing investment dollars by overseeing the preparation of bid specifications for technology purchases, obtaining the best pricing, and ensuring proper integration with the University’s enterprise architecture.
Foster a culture of teamwork among the academic and business units to help realize the technology needs of each unit.
Contribute to the development of policies and procedures on a broad range of University technology issues by serving as a campus leader and providing technical advice.
Ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability through coordination and preparation of the annual budget, authorizing the expenditure of funds, and maintaining overall budget control of the Information Technology Services department.
Represent the University in local, regional, and national IT organizations.
Serve as the Information Security Officer for the institution, responsible for the administration of information security policy and compliance requirements.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President.
At least a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT, or relevant field.
At least 10 years of supervisory, progressively more responsible experience in leading and managing an information technology operation for a complex organization is preferred.
Excellent knowledge of IT systems and infrastructure, of best practices in IT policies and procedures, and of available tools and techniques.
Highly adaptable, a change agent and an innovative leader who optimizes facilities, organizational structures, systems and technology to continue to position Doane University for success.
Experience and direct knowledge about the functions and operations in an institution of Higher Education is preferred
Leadership and supervisory experience in planning, managing, and leading staff, projects, and teams.
Experience in preparing and managing department budgets.
