Information and Technology Services (ITS) is looking for a Network Architect Intermediate to join the Infrastructure Network within ITS. This position reports to the Network Planning Manager.
This position plans, designs, optimizes and ensures the backbone, core, and data center network capacity meets current and future requirements for the University of Michigan. The Network Architect will test new protocols and technologies, such as IPv6 and software defined networking, and then develop a strategy for implementation. They will lead or coordinate projects and initiatives that include upgrades, troubleshooting issues, and integration of software/hardware. They will provide technical leadership and knowledge transfer to technical staff that support the campus network.

You have at least four (4) years of experience with designing networks, both Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), unicast and multicast; debugging software and troubleshooting networks; data center network architecture; and, scalable network design. Additionally, the successful candidate should have experience with protocols such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Interior Gateway Protocols (IGP), Intemediate System - Intermediate System (IS-IS), Multi-Protocol Label Sniffing (MPLS), Ethernet Virtual Private Network/Virtual Extensible Local Area Network (EVPN/VXLAN), as well as experience with Juniper and Cisco routers and switches, F5 load balancers, and firewalls.
Service Improvements – Plans and recommends network hardware, systems management software and architecture. Approves and modifies network design and architecture to ensure compliance. Leads service enhancement projects by identifying and quantifying customer requirements, delineating the gaps between customer requirements and the capabilities of existing technology and resources, and recommending proactive improvements. Collaborates with users, customers, team members and vendors to understand and review business requirements, define strategies and direction for solutions, and create network or process designs that balance requirements and risk, maintainability, and total cost of ownership/cost benefit analysis. Studies and develops a comprehensive understanding of assigned products, determines logic for solutions depending on platform, dependencies, integrations, and variables. Develops and implements methodologies for system analysis, installation, support and compatibility of all software and hardware products. Develops and maintains internal and external network documentation. Evaluates and recommends new products, maintains knowledge of emerging technologies for application to the enterprise.
Project Management – Manages the execution of the resources assigned to the project. Develops implementation and contingency plans, and timelines for projects. Provides status reports, exchanges relevant information with management and project teams, and meets timelines. Provides accurate time estimates for tasks, identifies impacted teams, and notifies management of potential risks and issues.
Strategy and Planning – Contributes to high-level network planning, design, and optimization. Develops strategies and direction for network systems solutions using current and emerging technologies (including wireless, IPv6, software defined networking, Et cetera (etc)). Collaborates with business partners and stakeholders across ITS and U-M to understand, develop and set the overall technical roadmap and contribute to the long-term strategic plan for the design and implementation of all aspects of a secure and robust campus network, in the context of the larger picture of ITS and University goals and strategy. Analyzes the technical environment and develops plans to align and accomplish strategies to meet current and future requirements.
Production Support – Actively coordinates with team members and service support groups to effectively resolve incidents, fixes, and minor enhancements. Assignments include, but are not limited to: coordination in the analysis, acquisition, and installation of hardware and software; analyzing data and developing recommendations for enhancements, upgrades, and replacement of infrastructure systems; troubleshooting; upgrades; integration; and maintenance of systems. Monitors applications and other systems for availability, error conditions, performance, and otherwise ensures services are fully operational. Educates ITS and customers on adherence to design and service architecture guidelines.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) - Routing and Switching
Minimum of four (4) years experience with designing networks, both IPv4 and IPv6, unicast and multicast; debugging software and troubleshooting networks; data center network architecture; and, scalable network design as well as Unix, MacOS and/or Windows based computers and 4 years of experience developing scripts or tools to manage network infrastructure
Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply analysis and scientific methodology skills in troubleshooting and problem solving
Demonstrated knowledge of applicable: computer operating systems; high level language programming; computer networking
Experience with Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) network management and network monitoring
Experience in dealing with security issues on servers and networks
Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, and collaboration applications
Demonstrated effective creative problem solving and flexibility when collaborating with customers, team members, support teams, external vendors, and technical organizations to understand, advocate for, evaluate, and support enhancements, resulting in plans and services that leverage the capabilities of existing technology and meet customer and organizational expectations.
