This position will be filled at the Senior level salary range of $68,462 - $97,900 as the primary goal. The requirements listed below reflect the Senior level expectation. Information and Technology Services (ITS) Advanced Research Computing - Technology Services (ARC-TS) has an exciting opportunity for a Research Database Administrator Senior. This position will report to the High Performance Computing (HPC) Operating Systems Programming Manager and will be responsible for designing, building, operating, and supporting database platforms. These platforms will contain SQL, NoSQL, and columnar data stores, to support faculty as part of the University of Michigan Data Science Initiative.
This position will act as a senior technical resource and will be responsible for creating and operating our research database infrastructure. The successful candidate will lead specific project initiatives and provide expertise, guidance, and strong collaboration to various team members. This role will be dynamic to meet the changing requirements for building and supporting new and innovative systems to meet faculty needs.

You have five (5) or more years experience in a similar role requiring a strong understanding of Linux, bash/shell, and Perl or Python. Performs database administration tasks for Oracle, Mysql, and/or Microsoft SQL including backing up databases, end-to-end tuning database configuration for optimal performance, monitoring and resolving errors. Also installs, configures, upgrades and patches database software
Create and maintain database support documentation
Design, develop, and create database images for researchers. Assist users in troubleshooting and utilizing the database of their choice. Advise users on the appropriate database or technology for their research. Investigate ways to improve user experience
Devise better ways to deliver databases as a service to researchers. Utilize existing and new technologies for delivering services via Docker containers, VM images, and cloud providers
Develop and maintain professional relationships both with other ARC-TS members and affiliates to advance and support computational research around the University
Serves as a representative of ARC-TS in relevant campus groups, forums, communities, and discussions. Provides updates and advice to team on relevant initiatives, staying abreast of the latest application technology trends in scientific hardware and environments
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, analysis, problem solving, and ability to work independently
Strong understanding of Linux, bash/shell, and one or both of the following programming languages: Perl or Python.
Strong understanding of the features of modern SQL databases (Indexes, Replication, Journaling, Partitioning)
Demonstrated experience with SQL and common SQL servers (PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, DB2, etc)
Familiarity with common NoSQL servers (Redis, MongoDB, CouchDB, and Vertica
Familiarity with Map Reduce and/or in memory analytics as a concept

Ability to self direct as well as participate in a larger distributed support structure
