Nemours is seeking a Software Systems Engineer (FULL-TIME) to join our team in Wilmington, Delaware.

We recently completed a multi-phase hospital expansion that includes new inpatient rooms, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department. As part of the Nemours Center for Health Delivery Innovation, the Consumer Digital Health team is developing the digital “front door” for Nemours. Pushing care into the hands of families with our vision of Nemours, anytime, anywhere, we are providing a frictionless, personalized digital experience for patient families that meets their needs on their terms. The team utilizes design thinking and agile methodologies as it integrates existing Nemours digital tools: MyNemours, CareConnect, KidsHealth, Nemours.org, and BrightStart! into a new interface for families.
This position will be responsible for the engineering, development, maintenance, and support of secure web-based and mobile clinical applications. This engineer will be passionate about the craft of agile software development, and will excel at the work of coding. Someone with a background in agile development and Scrum as well as development skills across multiple languages will be successful. This role will work at every phase of the software development life-cycle and will be personally responsible for entire application at each stage of development: requirements gathering/specification, designing the software architecture and application server environment, writing code and unit/integration testing according to design, documentation, deployment, maintenance, and some user support. Provide support (24x7 onsite-on-call) for production systems.
In order to achieve a high degree of productivity this position will expertly use Agile development in a DevOps environment. The person in this position is passionate about creating software that is easy to manage and maintain, operates in an understandable and transparent way and can be tested in an automated fashion as a way to prove the software works as it was meant to.
This position will make recommendations about advanced consumer technologies, acquisitions, and hiring within the Consumer Digital health group. The individual in this position has a high degree of responsibility and autonomy and therefore must keep up with current technologies, and be able to operate at both the high architectural level, but also at the low detailed coding level. The individual in this position will play a significant role in the success of Nemours in connecting patient families to care, anytime, anywhere.
Team Management Methodologies: Responsible for using Agile/ Scrum methodology for software development. Will work to facilitate cross training, and will utilize pairing to achieve goals. Familiar with Design Thinking for product design.
Team Environment: Will operate in a DevOps environment utilizing Continuous Integration and Deployment scripts, Test Driven Development (TDD) and Automated Testing.
Team Tools: Work through the process of engineering, developing, testing, documenting, deploying and maintaining both web-based, and native app Enterprise Java applications using the following:
a. Frameworks: Spring framework, Spring Data, Spring Security, Angular, Enterprise Java (EE)
b. RESTful APIs: Java Persistence API, Servlet/JSP, SLF4J, Java architecture for XML binding, JNDI, JDBC, LDAP.
c. Relational database(s): Schema design (ER diagraming)/DDL, SQL, SQL query tuning (Oracle and SQL Server)
d. iOS: Swift, xCode
e. Android: Java Native, Progressive Web App, and Hybrid.
g. Design/Project Life Cycle Methodologies: UML, OO Principles / Design Patterns, EE Design Patterns. Agile/SCRUM development, DevOps: continuous integration and deployment, test driven development, automated testing.
Responsible for software development productivity: focus on delivering working software through the full life-cycle of projects, including requirements design, technical/architectural design, task estimation, implementation, manual testing, automated testing, debugging, and deployment.
Production Support: Tests, troubleshoots, and analyzes complex system problems and determines solution. Must be on call 24 hours a day x 7 days a week in case of a problem with live applications.
Deployment: Coordinate with IS & Informatics for the daily operation of applications and with regard to the deployment process from development area to pre-production to staging to production, using the version control system (currently GIT and Mercurial via Bitbucket), including compliance with IS Change Control process for production deployment.
Assess and make recommendations regarding tools, languages, methodologies, and processes pertaining to the work of the NCHDI technical team. (The focus here is looking at what we currently do and how we do it.)
Bachelor's Degree required.
Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years experience required.
Excellent interpersonal/communications skills with the ability to interact effectively with team members and members of other departments. Ability to work in a fast paced / dynamic team environment and possess time management skills to meet schedules.
Excellent self-motivational skills – keep focused on delivery, clear about goals.
