Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the position include:

  • Oversee all university activity related to employment taxes, Unrelated Business Income Taxes (UBIT), sales and use taxes, other income and excise taxes, and all international taxes
  • Maintain close working relationships with the Provost Office, Executive Deans, officers and other senior leaders, associate deans, and other stakeholders
  • Prepare the annual IRS Form 990, Form 990-T and all related returns
  • Prepare and file all state and local sales and use tax returns
  • Monitor all tax filings and payments made by Payroll, Student Accounts, Student Financial Services, Accounts Payable, and other departments for timeliness and accuracy; address any shortfalls
  • Make or monitor all required estimated tax payments
  • Oversee payee tax status determinations, both employment and non-employment, including US citizens and foreign nationals
  • Manage the Independent Contractor determination process
  • Manage all federal, state and local tax inquiries and audits; review and respond as needed to all communication from taxing authorities
  • Assist in the evaluation of the university's unrelated business activities, and maintain records of such activities
  • Determine and maintain records of the university's activities and tax status internationally and domestically, including at the state level; recommend actions to comply, remedy exposure and mitigate risk
  • Keep up to date and advise on all tax related developments; make recommendations on tax related strategies
  • Advise on all existing and potential university tax positions
  • Establish and enforce record retention policies regarding taxes and tax related issues
  • Take a lead role in training stakeholders on tax issues and the use of applicable software systems and related reports
  • Prepare special analyses as requested.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A degree in accounting, finance or a related discipline
  • Seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in taxation at the institutional level of a college, university, or large corporate entity
  • Strong analytical skills and the proven ability to develop creative approaches to complex financial issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to present complex information to various audiences, including the Board of Trustees
  • Hands-on experience with accounting systems, preferably Workday
  • Superior PC-based data analysis skills
  • The ability to interact collegially with staff at various levels of the institution
  • A self-starter, with a pro-active attitude towards tasks, strong project management skills, and the ability to work under the pressure of strict periodic deadlines, and
  • Leadership and staff development skills
