The Assistant Director reports to and works closely as a thought-partner with the Director of External Relations Communications. Together, the External Relations Communications professionals are responsible for serving as a creative services team, producing general and highly customized engagement, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship communications, and digital content for individuals and institutions along with managing select special projects and publications, as requested.
The Assistant Director will be responsible for telling stories about the impact of philanthropy, writing case statements and proposals, and creating marketing materials for our donors, prospects, and alumni. Projects will include proposals, one-pagers, stewardship reports, event collateral and more. The position requires the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, serving as the lead on projects that involve colleagues in design, video, and/or digital services and require input from faculty and various other internal stakeholders as well as coordinating projects with freelance writers.
The ideal candidate is an organized, self-starter and superb writer with excellent interpersonal, project and people management skills.
Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Understanding T. H. Chan School fundraising goals, articulating how these goals advance the mission of the enterprise, and conveying the impact of philanthropy to a variety of audiences
Working collaboratively with faculty, various teams within the Chan School and across Harvard University to develop targeted communications products that inspire giving
Maintaining relationships with gift officers and making salient recommendations on communications strategies
Researching, writing, and editing content, including gift stories, proposals, whitepapers, brochures, letters, one-pagers, bios, and other marketing and event collateral
Tailoring written materials to inspire different audiences through a variety of channels
Coordinating reviews by internal and external partners and incorporating feedback
Managing production of communications projects and publications, tracking schedules and adhering to deadlines
Leading project meetings and participating in regular department-wide and team meetings
Working closely with in-house design, online, and video teams
Managing freelance writing resources and acting as project lead on outsourced projects
Other duties as assigned

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
5+ years of related experience required
Combined experience in individual and institutional fundraising, communications and/or related fields, with a preference for experience in healthcare or public health strongly preferred
Experience writing for nonprofits or in the fields of medicine and/or science strongly preferred
Demonstrated understanding of current trends in fundraising and communications preferred
Extensive experience working with Principal and Major Gift Officers preferred
Demonstrated experience communicating complex issues in a clear and compelling manner preferred
Flexibility and a sense of humor preferred
Experience synthesizing ideas and information into clear, accurate, and persuasive prose; changing voice and writing styles for various authors and audiences; and adapting content for different purposes and communications channels preferred
Strong attention to detail and copyediting and proofing skills preferred
Client service orientation, with proven experience interacting with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization preferred
Demonstrated sound judgment in situations that require independent decision making, problem solving, and handling confidential and sensitive materials preferred
Demonstrated experience applying ingenuity and creativity in solving complex problems preferred
Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills preferred
